Forms of advertising and revenue are constantly changing. We’ve been listening for some time to publishers looking for new ways to monetize games with live ads. A new patent filed by Microsoft (detected by playful) points to the same thing.
The patent in question appears to be a method of “providing personalized content for a non-intrusive online gaming experience”.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Microsoft was working on an in-game advertising program for free titles, while it was claimed that similar plans were also in the works for Sony.
Of course, patents are not necessarily indicative of concrete plans and are often simply a means of protecting ideas. But if it were to take place, it’s more than likely the community would fall on it with a deluge of criticism.
From Microsoft’s side, which has confirmed the rise of exclusives and hardware in the near future, as well as the price of longer-term subscriptions, the implementation of such a thing does not seem likely anytime soon. From the Xbox Space, it is hoped that this advertising will not end up being imposed, even if in theory it is non-intrusive.
