Starfield is said to be so extensive that development for other platforms, such as the PlayStation, would have significantly hampered the development process.
Pete Hines was interviewed by an FTC attorney during the court case where the Federal Trade Commission was reviewing Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. There he stated that he was behind the decision to make Starfield an exclusive title. Only in this way would it be possible to develop the latest role-playing game Epos in such a short time, since it does not have to be optimized for other platforms. This allowed every intended feature to find its way into the final game and allowed Starfield to be as insanely extensive as it is.
Due to the exclusivity, the game could also be developed faster, with fewer bugs and more cost-effectively. Starfield is said to be Bethesda’s most bug-free release to date.
Also, in a podcast with Kinda Funny Games, Bethesda CEO Todd Howard said that dropping features in favor of a performance mode was never an option, so Starfield’s framerate will be capped at 30fps.
Starting September 6th, you can see for yourself if Hines can deliver on his promises when Starfield comes to XBox Series X/S and PC. It will be available in Game Pass immediately upon release.
