Hello, I’m Rho Watson, the lead developer behind this Farworld pioneers. This 2D adventure galaxy sandbox is a mix of many genres. What’s more, it’s the game I’ve always wanted to make. Let me tell you why!
I played when I was a teenager infiniminer and was one of the first to try the online version of Minecraft. The online sandbox genre captured my imagination, but it never really achieved what I was hoping for. When I finished building my big projects, there was no real reason for them to exist anymore. My gigantic bases just sat there, dormant and unused because there was no one but me to use them. My friends came, took a quick look and inevitably went off to do their own thing.
After playing these games for many years and helping to develop some of them, I decided to bite the bullet and try to do what no one had done before: an online sandbox game with the excitement of Building and designing to develop, but actually with AI residents give a reason for these things to exist. I wanted to give players a reason to build beyond simple curiosity and showing off to often reluctant friends!
Farworld pioneers depicts two main periods of my life as a gamer: playing old MS-DOS classics (for those who don’t know, that’s how games were played before Windows!) as a kid, and then the rise of the online sandbox genre as an adult. That’s how it goes Farworld pioneers was born! Like many other games, this game is a cross-section of my video game career journey and a tribute to the games that made it happen.
But Farworld pioneers is not just an online sandbox game. It’s a 2D adventure sandbox with management elements. Imagine an RTS where you were one of the guys running around and could help out at any time. Your dwellers need to be happy, fed, and safe, which means how your base is designed matters. Poor design will cause your dwellers to become dissatisfied and abandon the base, further hampering its function. Accumulating wealth makes your base a target for marauders and pirates, making defense and tactics a must when designing a colony. Tangled supply lines will confuse your dwellers and disrupt supplies; Energy sources need fuel to run; Residents need food, the list goes on.
The beauty of AI-controlled dwellers is that they provide a way to delegate tasks that you don’t want to do. Instead of struggling to build a huge house yourself, you can lay down the plans and let your team build them while you adventure. Tired of Mining? You can pull out an area and your guys will do it for you. They also tow away the materials to be processed ready for use. And you can always join and help them without disrupting the process; The option is there if you feel like it. Once you have achieved all the things you want to achieve on a planet, you can build a ship with your colonists and launch into space to explore and find new resources, biomes and technologies. There are bosses, secrets, a full tech tree to unlock and many more features including a huge multiplayer mode with up to 32 others that I can’t explain here! I’m super excited for everyone to play when it releases on Xbox and Xbox Game Pass on May 30th!
