Introducing Lyn: Astroneer’s first antagonist

antagonist, Astroneers, Introducing, Lyn

It has been almost eight years since we started Astroneer in Game Preview on the Xbox platform. This week we are proud to share a first look at our very first major villain, Lyn, who will be appearing in our upcoming Glitchwalkers expansion!

Glitchwalkers – Our first expansion

Astroneer has grown bigger than we ever could have imagined. We’ve had the opportunity to update the game dozens of times with community-requested features and our own creations. From jetpacks and pets to rails and custom modes, we’ve always tried to improve the game with your help, and this time is no different.

Over the years we have received countless requests for new places to explore, so this expansion focuses on a brand new planet in a new solar system, Aeoluz! Another common request is, Astroneer a little more challenging. This is where Lyn comes in.

Lyn is in control

Lyn is a disgruntled systems expert of the ESS Elysium Crew, who has her own reality in the Astroneer Universe. In this reality, you are at its mercy. As a skilled hacker, Lyn can manipulate the planet itself, altering its biomes and atmosphere to its core. Despite the planet’s increasing instability, she has made it increasingly hostile to ensure that no one can thwart her plan. In addition to the planet itself, she will use various viruses and reality-altering tools to fend off potential invaders.

Creating Lyn

We had a lot of fun doing it! It was a new and unique experience to create a character that is part of the crew while also standing out as a troublemaker. We followed our usual process and started with lots of quick sketches focusing on shapes, silhouettes and key features. Once we had a solid group, we picked out various bits and pieces we liked and put them together into refined 2D turns. Looking at the concepts, Lyn’s final design is a mix of Option K and Option O, as seen in the image below, with an integrated hood, but Lyn’s physical appearance looks digitally hacked together – just like the rest of the planet.

Staying true to our roots

To be clear: Even with a little more challenge, the game you know and love is still there. Crafting, building and exploring with friends are the focus StonyAnd while the expansion itself is packed with new content, there will also be a free companion update to the base game. Everyone can jump right in and experience something new!

We can’t wait for you all to face Lyn and explore the new planet. Astroneer: Glitchwalker. We’re working hard on our final launch date, which will be available on Xbox and Windows 10 later in 2024. Add it to your wishlist today!
