We travel through prehistoric times in the back of an alien jet plane
We are already in 2021 and we never turn down the opportunity to play a 2D platform game like Jet Kave Adventure, a throwback to the old school with a twist. And is 7Levels brings us a proposal which, without being a revolution, contains enough elements to surprise the player in terms of jump mechanics.
With an aesthetic that reminds us of titles like Caveman Ninja, Jet Kave Adventure puts us in the shoes of coffee, leader of a cave tribe who was banished by his own. Meanwhile, a mysterious spaceship crashes nearby and an alien wants to cause a volcanic eruption to repair his ship.
Kave, find a strange artifact on the floor that turns out to be a propulsion backpack With which our defenestrated hero will find unique ways to get to where no caveman has gone and save our city from destruction. This accessory, together with our club and a scarf, will be our tool to walk the path that leads us to the final confrontation with the strange being fallen from the sky.
We find ourselves in a beautiful world, with variety in the 4 places we will visit, from jungle, beach scenery, rocky views full of caves and the very volcano where our enemy is located. All this with a lot of colors in a 2.5D environment with good lighting and that will surely capture the attention of the player. Although the animations, on the other hand, are too simple and limited, they meet what one would expect from a fairly humble title.
In the sound section, the soundtrack offers various themes and some quite “rod holder“But in terms of animal sounds or effects, they’re quite small and repetitive. There is little dialogue, being in an invented language, obviously, but we find them subtitled in Spanish, although again we come across tiny text sizes.
In 36 levels in total, divided into 4 different scenarios, each with its own characteristic elements and enemies, reaching up to 30 different ones. Despite this, enemies behave very similarly between worlds and the way to end them is pretty much the same, which doesn’t speak well for the design.
Regarding the level design, despite their similar dynamics, they always find a way to explore the different nooks and crannies along the way to find all the shells (which will not be used for the store), the fruits (to restore the health) and the collectible found in each level.
However, how to deal with different situations gets a bit repetitive, so sometimes it doesn’t matter that much if we haven’t walked around a corner of the sublevels to find the trophy. It’s also not a challenge in terms of taking down enemies like the platforming system, and while we might expect some opposition with the final bosses, these are fairly easy to defeat and still in the same way.
To move through the stages, you can jump, but what characterizes Jet Kave Adventure is the jetpack, which gives us a little boost in the jump, with a power meter that will wear out in about two seconds. We also have an extra boost in the form of hyphen
To face the various enemies, we will also have our club and a slingshot to throw stones, which has the handicap that ammunition is a bit scarce. We can upgrade the jetpack, club, slingshot, and health after each sublevel in the store, and the currency will be the shells we find during the tour.
To restore health, we have two ways, or we eat, when we fill mules which is supplemented by collecting food when defeating enemies and breaking certain items, or when passing through a checkpoint . Another thing that harms the title, as the food is plentiful, as are the checkpoints, which are spread out very closely.
The duration of the game, with its 36 sub-levels divided into 4 environments, is not excessively long, because if you are not a collector and looking to hunt for exploits, you can practically complete the game in one or two afternoons. The replayability of Jet Kave Adventure lies in your ambition to complete the game and make it 100%, because we can repeat the sublevels whenever we want without losing progress.
We only found additional motivation when unlocking the Arcade mode, which will be a real challenge because if we die, it’s over and the only way to regain vitality is between level and level. But all is not negative, because in addition to the main mechanics of the game there will be moments of chases (bosses), others in which we will fly vertically like a “Martian-killer” game and others in which we will help each other with a hang-glider. to get to the other end of the level.
In short, we come across a fun 2D game in the old school style with enough elements to surprise the player, at least initially, but which is losing speed in terms of demand, as one would expect in a title like this. The sense of variety evaporates as soon as we notice that the various enemies are eliminated or dodged in exactly the same way as those in other environments and that they behave almost the same, leaving them as mere skins of others. .
The lack of difficulty even in the final bosses and their simplistic design kind of spoils how far we’ve come to get to this showdown, which is theoretically exciting, but their execution, demeanor, and way of defeating them are pretty much the same. Still, it’s an entertaining title, which platform game enthusiasts will find appealing due to its colorful design and affordable price.
