Since yesterday, the web lights up quickly after the trailer of Baldur’s Gate 3 in the state of affairs. In fact, the presented video mentions the platforms on which the game will be released when it is released on August 31st. The absence of Xbox in the picture has sparked a wave of misunderstandings on Twitter, with everyone wondering if it’s some form of exclusivity acquired by PlayStation. The founder of the studio Swen VinckeHe even spoke on the networks to calm player excitement.
However, his words do not contradict the principle of the title’s console exclusivity. The studio has therefore taken a stand and issued an official statement that brings more clarity:
We’ve seen many different interpretations of what this means, so we wanted to clarify the situation. We have an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 in development for some time. During the development of this Xbox port, we ran into some technical issues that prevented us from announcing it with confidence until we were sure we’d found the right solutions. Specifically, we were unable to get split-screen co-op to work on Xbox Series X and S, which is a non-negotiable condition of the game’s release.
There’s no platform exclusivity stopping us from going out Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox at launch, if technically possible. When we announce other platforms, we want to make sure each release lives up to our standards and expectations.
As you can read, it was mainly a technical constraint that prevented the game from being announced on the same date, rather than signing a contract with a console player.
