If the original Empty room Released back in 2008, it offered a unique experience that skillfully blended elements of sci-fi and horror. It became an instant classic around the world and is now considered one of the best survival horror games of all time. Accompanying the release was a trailer so unique it became an iconic media piece itself: the Lullaby Trailer.
Combining haunting vocals with chilling horror scenes, the trailer perfectly captures the atmosphere of the game. The trailer introduced the USG Ishimura, the doomed mining ship that serves as the game’s main setting. It was such an impactful and memorable introduction that fans fell in love with it immediately. In fact, it was so effective that similar trailers were created for later games in the franchise.
More than a decade later, our team started working on the remake. Of course, as part of this process we spent a lot of time examining the original game – and we also revisited all the media surrounding it to use as a reference. I’d frequently loop the trailer in the background on another computer while I worked… and this creepy rendition of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” was just starting to dig into my mind.
Then, after we announced the game, I started seeing fans commenting online about how cool it would be to re-watch the trailer for the remake. As long as Empty room Fan myself, I knew I could do this. After the production was complete I decided to do some recording and put together my own updated version of the Lullaby trailer as a surprise for the rest of the team. And once they saw what I was working on, other members of the team were happy to help.
We worked hard to get all the recordings we needed, which wasn’t as easy as you might think. For one, I had planned to make an exact 1:1 copy of the original, but many of the shots in the original trailer are actually from the USM Valor section of the game, not Ishimura. I wanted to make sure that all of the footage was from the Ishimura, since that’s the game’s primary location – so I decided to use footage that matched the composition and theme of the original, but change the locations as needed. (There’s actually another quick shot of that bravery; see if you can spot it!)
The most challenging parts, however, were all of the Necromorph attacks; Some of the shots are only visible on screen for a split second, so it was difficult to capture the exact same scenes – with the right lighting and clear composition, no less! And let’s just say Necromorphs aren’t the most willing collaborators. Olivier Asselin, the game’s audio director, stepped in to update the trailer’s audio with our own recording of the vocals and did a great job of perfectly recreating the chaotic cacophony of instruments that accompanies the jump cuts.
All the developers who worked on the remake have so much love for Empty room. The series holds a very special place in my heart because I was fortunate enough to work on it as an environment artist dead space 2 And dead space 3. Having the chance to update one of my favorite media from the original game was such a fun project. We’re really proud of the end result and hope fans appreciate this trip down memory lane as much as we do.
