A few months ago we revealed The door of death – available from today for Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S – our dark and bizarre action adventure about a sword-wielding crow that is supposed to hide the souls of the dead. Since the announcement, the response has been incredible. We have had a lot of faith in our idea for this game since we started developing it almost four years ago, but it was very comforting to see how excited everyone else is about being a bird with a sword and about this unusual world explore that we’ve created!
We wanted to share a little more about the world you will be entering and a handful of characters to await at the start of your journey.
You play as the crow who works for the enigmatic Reaping Commission, a bureaucratic organization recruited by a mysterious creature called the Lord of Doors. The Reaper linger in their main office, the Hall of Doors, waiting for orders.
The crows
The reapers on the commission are all crows committed to bringing in the souls of the dead. They use a series of doors that can connect any two points in the room to travel around and do their jobs. This technology, given to them by the Lords of Doors, runs on soul energy, so having a steady supply of souls on the commission is a must. You will of course be rewarded with battle-enhancing upgrades in exchange for your hard-earned souls.
Nowadays, jobs are few and far between. Most of the life in the world has slowly faded and there are not many living things to die for and so not many souls can be harvested. So it is on everyone’s lips when suddenly a giant soul is assigned to you as your next mission! Souls act as some kind of currency in the economy of the crows – landing a giant soul would be a big payday!
Steadhone of the gravedigger
One of the first characters you will encounter on your adventure is Steadhone. He is the keeper of the graves at Lost Cemetery, a gentle old soul who has made it his business to ensure that the deceased on the island receive an appropriate burial and burial.
Steadhone has an unusual problem that is certainly unique among the characters you will encounter in this world … he cannot die, not even by the feathered hands of a reaper. He has the feeling that his time in this world is up and should have passed many moons ago, but he lives on. You may learn more about its backstory as you delve deeper into the secrets of the world of Death’s Door, but in the meantime, you will surely make sense of it if you send it a lot of work (by harvesting so many souls)!
Stoners
Another character you will encounter on your journey will also have a curse to bear – although this one is much stranger; he has a pot for his head. The strange urn witch cursed him to be forever laden with a ceramic noggin. Why? Who knows? We know, but you have to play the game to find out.
Kiffer is a simple guy with simple desires, he doesn’t love fights, but he loves gardening, calls himself an avid gardener who has left beautiful green pots of earth everywhere. These pots are your lifeline for planting seeds that you can find in the world and that grow into flowers that will restore your health! Thank you, Pothead!
The witch of the urns
The mysterious witch who cursed your new friend Pothead resides in a grand mansion surrounded by lush (but somewhat dangerous) stately gardens. Pots, urns and ceramics adorn every corner of your magnificent home, some of them even have their own mind.
You will have the opportunity to meet and speak to her several times throughout your trip and get a peek inside the minds of this rather kind and welcoming (if pot-obsessed) old lady. How could someone so hospitable curse stoners?
She is the first of the three giant souls that you have to harvest in order to unleash the secrets behind it The door of death, and as you interact with her, learn about her motivations and the impact she has had on the world around her.
This was just a little taste of the peculiar world of The door of death and its people, who we hope you find lovable, fascinating and sometimes weird. You will encounter these characters early on in your journey, and many more strange and wonderful personalities await you as you progress.
It’s a setting and a cast that we’ve grown to over the years, and that takes inspiration from everything we loved as kids. It’s gloomy, a bit absurd and sometimes bleakly beautiful at the same time and yet everything makes sense – and we can’t wait to invite you!

Harvesting souls of the dead and striking a clock may be monotonous, but for a crow it is honest work. The job comes alive when your assigned soul is stolen and you must track down a desperate thief in a realm untouched by death – where creatures grow well past their expiration date and overflow with greed and power.
