the Metaverse, where people can traverse the virtual world using digital avatars, is next for Microsoft, and the company is approaching it with caution.
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, recently spoke on Microsoft’s approach to the Metaverse. During the event Microsoft FutureReady of this January 11 Nadella assured the following: “For years we have talked about creating a digital representation (of us) and now we have the opportunity to do so and to connect with humanity through the metaverse. .”
This approach comes just at a time when Facebook, the social media giant, has rebranded itself Meta and is investing $10 billion to build its metaverse. Now, Microsoft is also building capabilities for consumers and businesses to connect across the metaverse.
Mesh, the gateway to the metaverse
At the corporate event in November 2021, Microsoft has announced that it will release Mesh for Microsoft Teams, the firm’s videoconferencing platform.
People will be able to create their own digital avatars and interact/collaborate in a virtual environment, for example a virtual office space. They will be able to do this simply by connecting with a virtual reality headset such as Microsoft HoloLens. Mesh its release is slated for 2022. The idea is simply to connect with colleagues through video conferences or games, but in reality the ultimate goal is to “be with them”.
Nadella explained that they take these platform capabilities and integrate them into their own apps to bring collaborative experiences to a extremely immersive level. The goal is to be able to have a meeting where everyone is present without being physically together. According to him, the metaverse transforms not only the way we see the world, but also the way we all actively participate in it.
