Microsoft has seen in recent years how buying large and medium-sized studios is a long-term investment to nurture its gaming platforms and content for all audiences. Studios like Playground, Ninja Theory or companies like Bethesda or Activision itself.
The American company seeks with these purchases to continue adding to its portfolio of games more interesting titles for players, which, as explainedthe president of Microsoft, Brad SmithMicrosoft and Xbox are still lacking more popular games among gamers.
Add more popular games with the purchase of Activision
Acquiring Activision Blizzard would make Microsoft more competitive in the market through innovations that would benefit consumers. While today’s consumers can play videos or music on multiple devices with low-cost subscriptions, different games often only need to be purchased and downloaded on one device. Microsoft wants to change that by offering gamers the option to sign up for a cloud service that would allow them to play a host of games on multiple devices at a reasonable price. It would also benefit gamers and developers, allowing them to reach an even wider audience.
To bring new subscribers to this service, Microsoft needs a library full of popular games, and as things stand, we just don’t have enough. Here’s why the acquisition comes into play: Activision Blizzard owns popular mobile, PC, and console games like Candy Crush, World of Warcraft, and Call of Duty.
Obviously, the brands Activision owns are very popular and joining Microsoft would only improve the offering for all gamers and developers. If all goes according to plan, Microsoft expects to complete the purchase of Activision next year, in the first half of the year.
