Monkey Island expansion now playable

Expansion, Island, Monkey, playable

The merging of Sea of Thiefs and Monkey Island is more than obvious, which makes it all the more gratifying that the moment has finally arrived.

If you watch Sea of Thieves and have previously played Monkey Island, you will find many parallels. Certainly Guybrush’s funny pirate world was a certain inspiration for the title. In an interview, the Xbox Wire team spoke to Creative Director Mike Chapman about how The Legend of Monkey Island came about.

For the director, the basic idea of the young pirate who wants to start his adventure has direct direct links between the two games.

Chapman commented, “We wanted to approach the question ‘What if?’ – ‘What if characters from Monkey Island discovered the world of Sea of Thieves?’ – it felt like what the two had in common was something that is at the heart of Monkey Island; Guybrush begins his journey as a wannabe pirate and of course in Sea of Thieves you play as yourself – you create your pirate and embark on a journey to become a pirate legend. So in Sea of Thieves, Guybrush can be the legend he’s always wanted to be. What if that was the core of our story? What if the Sea of Thieves could give Guybrush everything he ever wanted?”

Of course, in the design you have to take into account how different the systems of the games are, and you don’t destroy the actual DNA of the franchise. So the team took great care when creating The Legend of Monkey Island so as not to break the balance here. For example, nobody wants to play an adventure in first-person perspective all at once.

Describing the work, Mike says, “We wanted to strike a balance of staying true to the feel of Monkey Island while still respecting the fact that it’s a first-person experience.”

The team still wants to recreate moments in Sea of Thieves that can be experienced directly in a point-and-click adventure. The typical sword fight with insults should not be missing here.

“The sword fight with insults, we had to do it. But I think it adds a new element of mystery to combat in Sea of Thieves, which works really well.”
