If your game focuses on a cast of relatable characters and their small-town conflicts and dramas, don’t be surprised to hear players ask for more. As a community manager for mutation, I’ve seen countless warm inquiries for Mutations Story to continue. Players want DLC. You want a sequel. You want a trilogy! From day one, it has always been in the works to release an update that will focus on the characters and their stories. The Penpal update does just that, although it might surprise players how exactly.
Also in the slogan for mutation (“They can survive an apocalyptic meteor strike, but can they survive their small-town drama?”). Sure – there is one aspect of conflict that is earth-shattering as players uncover the secret behind the ailing Papu tree, but most of the game’s conflicts are human. Unrequited love. Personal trauma. Broken family ties. As Kai makes friends, learns secrets, and helps these characters resolve each of these conflicts, our bonds with these characters deepen.
That makes the Penpal update a little unique as it isn’t about conflict or drama. It’s not a sequel – it’s an epilogue. It doesn’t continue the story of mutationbut lays a bow on it. Some players might be a little disappointed with this. There are many storylines at the end of the game that could lead to more conflict, more drama, and more storyline for Kai to return to the island and resolve. But the focus of the Penpal update is on the other end of that spectrum.
Kai saves Mutazione. Without going into any specific spoilers, Kai, helping the good people in Mutazione resolve their conflicts, is such a big part of why the game is so popular. It’s almost like a friendship simulator where your friends come to you with problems and you help them overcome them. An important part of this process is the aftermath. Not only do you help them at this moment, but you also see how it goes on. Seeing how your actions have helped someone in the long term is just as gratifying as the act of helping them in the short term.
The Penpal update is all about you pulling it off. It does not introduce a new villain to defeat, a new obstacle to overcome, or a new conflict to overcome. It just shows you what happened in the community after Kai left and returned to the mainland. It’s been two years mutation
