The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will not be accompanied by another Mario & Sonic entry and there is a reason for that.
Mario & Sonic have been part of the Olympic Games for years. The competitions are usually accompanied by a game in which the two gaming icons show off their particularly athletic side. However, anyone who was hoping for a game for Paris 2024 will be left empty-handed.
As developer Lee Cocker via X/Twitter announced that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games in the Tokyo 2020 edition was the last game of its kind and he should know, since he has been involved in all games of this kind up to now.
The post does not initially explain why there will be no Mario & Sonic game for the 2024 Olympics, but a report from Eurogamer states that the IOC has not renewed the licensing agreement with Nintendo and SEGA. Cocker also revealed to Eurogamer that the IOC probably wanted to explore other options, such as new partners as well as NFTs and e-sports.
According to Cocker, the IOC seems to want to regain more control over the Olympic Games in this way and, of course, earn more money accordingly.
