“This is a measure that we have voluntarily chosen to take”
The next Xbox RPG, Declaredis approaching the end of its development, with Obsidian targets February 2025 release for Game Pass title. Although the team claims that optimization is still ongoing and the game’s specifications won’t be 100% certain until launch, has confirmed that Avowed is targeting 30 FPS on Xbox.
In an interview that took place at Gamescom 2024, A member of Obsidian’s development team spoke about their frame rate goal and why the team settled on 30 FPS.
“Performance is one of the last things we consider, right? Our main goal is 30 FPS minimum, that’s what we expect. This is a single-player first-person game, so you don’t necessarily need 60 FPS. That allows us to get a lot more out of the effects, the lighting, and everything else, which is much more important.
This is a change we decided to make relatively soon and we are very happy about it. The game performs very well for the visual display we have achieved and that has always been our goal. As far as confirming all the performance specifications, this is one of the last things that will be done.
So, at least at launch, it looks like Avowed will be a 30 FPS game on Xbox Series X and S.. We’ve seen other titles launch into this goal and then get a high frame rate mode later (Redfall, for example), but It doesn’t appear that this is part of Obsidian’s plans with Avowed at the moment..
If the game runs smoothly at 30 FPS, we don’t think it’s a big deal, although a 60 FPS option is always welcome. Either way, The rest of the game is looking pretty good, judging by the latest demo shown at Gamescom.
