The wait for fans of the Commandos franchise will be a little longer. After announcing plans to relaunch the series in 2018, Kalypso Media and Claymore Game Studios had planned to release Commandos: Origins in 2024. However, according to a recent press release, the game will now be released in March 2025.

The decision to delay the launch is largely due to the comments and suggestions from players who participated in the playtests and the Commandos: Origins demo. The studio thanks players for their valuable feedback, which helped identify key areas for improvement, such as performance optimization, AI behavior, and voiceovers.

In an update post, the studio explains that it is working hard to resolve these points and ensure that the game is ready for release next year. While the wait may be frustrating for some, the studio believes this is the best decision for the game, the team and most importantly the players.

The studio has released an in-depth breakdown of what exactly it's doing to make sure the game is ready for release.

1) Performance optimization

Overall game performance is a top priority as we get closer to launch. We've heard your concerns about performance and the game feeling clunky in some cases because of this, especially in the demo. Improving optimization for a smooth gaming experience is crucial and we are committed to fine-tuning performance to ensure a smooth and immersive experience.

2) Improved AI behavior

Players have reported several instances where the AI did not react as expected, breaking the flow of the game and the player's immersion. Fixing this issue is a priority for us, and we are making improvements to ensure interactions with AI are realistic and dynamic.

3) You are renewed

Your comments on the voice-overs, particularly on the intensity of the German voices, did not go unnoticed. Current versions of the game include temporary voiceovers. We continue to record and refine the dialogue, and the final version will feature finalized voice lines in English, German, French, Spanish and Chinese.

4) Adjusted controls and added customization options

The control layout is another aspect that received feedback, with some players commenting that the default layout wasn't intuitive enough. We are re-evaluating the keyboard shortcuts to reflect your feedback and while we may not be able to accommodate every individual request, you will have 3 different control schemes to choose from and for PC we offer custom keyboard shortcuts so that You can adjust the keyboard shortcuts as you wish.

5) A modernized loot system will replace the inventory system

As early as the closed alpha, players reported missing collecting “loot” and having a backpack with an inventory system. This feature would add depth and more options to the game. After receiving feedback, we discussed again and investigated possible approaches.
After careful consideration, we opted for a modernized loot system that fits our vision of staying true to the heart of the Commandos series, prioritizing stealth rather than giving the player the option to simply storm the enemy territory. What does this mean in Commandos: Origins? Some enemies will drop loot, such as ammo, collectibles, and uniforms, when stunned or killed. Loot can also be found in your environment. Once you have collected an item, it is directly available to the selected Commando through its abilities without the need for additional inventory (i.e. a backpack).

6) Non-lethal combat options

Many players have asked about the game's non-lethal combat options. We are happy to confirm that this will be implemented in the game after launch! You will be able to temporarily stun enemies, which will add an extra layer of strategic depth to the game.

7) Music

The iconic music from previous games is loved by many fans, and some have requested that we use the same soundtrack or composer, Mateo Pascual. While we deeply respect Pascual's legacy, we are also eager to bring something new with the talented Dynamedion team. Our hope is to combine tradition and innovation, creating a soundtrack that draws on Pascual's influence while bringing new elements to Commandos: Origins.

8) Extended Map Design

Map size is a category of feedback that demo players have particularly focused on, as well as linear layout. Rest assured, the hand-crafted demo mission was just a taste of the main gameplay. The full game will feature larger, more open maps with many possibilities for different approaches, ensuring a multi-level mission experience.

9) Refine the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX)

Their attention to detail in the UI and UX was incredibly helpful. Although we'll stick to the overall design, many of your suggestions are now on our list; We are currently testing and implementing more tips and advice to increase transparency and accessibility.

Commandos: Origins promises to revive the real-time tactical experience that made the franchise famous, with an original team and modernized gameplay for current-gen platforms.
