A new patent suggests Microsoft could be working on its own VR headset.
In the past, Microsoft hadn’t shown much interest in a mass-market VR device. In 2021, Phil Spencer says it’s better to focus on virtual reality software than, say, an Xbox VR headset.
But that doesn’t mean the company isn’t playing around with ideas for new hardware internally.
This is also shown by the patent for a possible VR headset, which was filed by Microsoft. The patent describes an improved eye-tracking system that could also be used in VR devices. An important feature of this idea is a self-calibrating system that can even detect deformations on the device.
Whether this is actually a new VR device or whether Microsoft is only patenting an improvement for its HoloLens remains to be seen.
