“It will simply be a strategy that works for us”
Xbox boss Phil Spencer made an appearance at Gamescom 2024kicking off Microsoft’s daily live streaming schedule scheduled for the coming days. Of course, with the good news of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Phil was quickly asked about the PS5 launch announcement and what it means for Xbox going forward.
His answer doesn’t differ too much from what we’ve heard before, but in short, Phil believes the team’s new approach will improve the long-term health of Xbox and its franchises.. Here’s what he had to say about the topic in general and Indy coming to PS5:
“As for the PlayStation announcement, last spring we released four games (two on Switch, four on PlayStation) and we said we were going to learn from them. We said we would monitor what was going to happen and I think at the Showcase I could have said ‘from that learning, we’re going to bring more new things to players.’”
What I see is that our franchises are getting stronger (our Xbox console player count is as high this year as it’s ever been), so I look at it and say our player count is growing for the console platform. Our franchises are as strong as they’ve ever been, and we’re running our business well.
Without a doubt, at Microsoft we have a very high bar in terms of what we have to give back to the company and we receive a level of support from the company that is incredible in what we can do.
So I see this as a way to make our games as strong as possible. Our platform continues to grow across console, PC, and cloud, so I think this will be a strategy that works for us.
Phil also discussed the overall health of the industrystating that we, as fans, “We will have to anticipate that there will be more changes” as to how games will be created and distributed in the future.
