To celebrate the release of Metaphor: ReFantazio, Katsura Hashino, director of the fantasy role-playing game Metaphor: ReFantasia, hosted a 30-minute livestream yesterday to dive into everything from the game’s setting to the United Kingdom of Euchronia to the monsters you’ll face and how you can fight to see a new day. Hashino-san opened the livestream by giving us a quick overview of where our story begins. The United Kingdom of Euchronia hangs in the balance as usurpers vie for the throne and political unrest increases. Amid this chaos, our story follows a young protagonist and his fairy companion Gallica as they embark on a secret mission that could decide the fate of the entire nation.

After setting the scene, Hashino-san gives us some advice on how to cope with the variety of creatures we will encounter on our journey. As you approach potential threats, you can use Gallica to scan an enemy’s threat level, allowing you to take out easy opponents or prepare for more challenging opponents. Hashino-san also recommends using surprise attacks and enemy weaknesses to increase the number of your actions. However, the UK Euchronia is not for the faint of heart – the enemies in Metaphor: ReFantasia

are designed to challenge even the most experienced RPG fans. Keep this in mind when setting the difficulty level at the start of the game, or adjust the setting as your journey progresses if you find yourself overwhelmed.

While advantages and weaknesses are crucial to gaining the upper hand, the greatest tools in your arsenal are archetypes – special powers that awaken in various forms. Fourteen main lines of archetypes branch out into over 40 archetypes in total, each with special powers that can be swapped within your party depending on your combat strategy – and which determine which weapon is chosen in real-time combat. You must interact and build bonds with your followers throughout your journey to awaken and strengthen these archetypes.

As you learn the ins and outs of combat and archetypes, keep an eye on the in-game calendar. The story is tied to a day and night cycle driven by your decisions and actions. So choose your next steps carefully. How you spend your time is up to you – move through dungeons, interact with friends, improve virtues – but time is always limited.
