Tencent acquires a minority stake in Yooka Laylee developer Playtonic Games.
Playtonic Games confirms that Tencent has acquired a minority stake in the developer of Yooka-Laylee. The studio says it will retain “full creative control of its IP” and use Tencent’s investment funds to move from its current structure to a larger one.
“Playtonic … will use the investment to scale from the current one-team structure to multiple teams, with an emphasis on hiring diverse talent from near and far, improving headquarters and expanding into new locations,” it says in the Playtonic Games blog post.
According to Gavin Price, founder of Playtonic Games, Tencent’s investment will help the studio scale and move faster on the “super-exciting, super-secret projects we’ve kept in our treasure chests”.
The studio’s expansion has already begun, with Playtonic Games hiring Danny Spiteri, who previously worked at Raw Fury and Team 17, as the new Head of Publishing.
