Square Enix today announced a change in its development policy. From now on, the Japanese company will focus more on the quality than the quantity of its titles and, above all, will seek multiplatform releases. A decision that comes after poor sales of its latest games, which led to a 70% drop in profits compared to the previous year.
However, beyond the fact that sales were not at the expected level, Square Enix confirms that one of the reasons for this decline is the cancellation of various games in development.
Massive cancellations are behind Square Enix’s commercial turnaround
As the Japanese developer confirmed, this decision This would have resulted in losses of just over 22 million yen, or approximately $141 million. These games, as they claim, were not aligned with the new company policywhich will now focus on cross-platform AAA releases.
The objective seems clear: access a larger user base and, thus, increase the number of sales of exclusive games, temporary or not. So, Square Enix is now expected to release more titles on an even wider variety of platforms.
