You had only been in power for a short time, your explorers were beginning to discover resources and relics while your villagers worked. Some were dedicated to cutting down the trees closest to the city center while others hunted or worked on the farms. Others were further away, in the mines, where they extracted the gold so necessary for military power. On the other hand, the builders were shaping the pillars of this first temple while you took the first sip of your hot cup of cocoa. It was cold outside, it had just rained and you had no other concern than not to be defeated by your enemies. The Age of Mythology. This was happening around 2002 and now22 years later the story is told with The Age of Mythology Revisited, although with some changes.
Age of Mythology Retold’s Graphical Leap
The Age of Mythology Revisited born from the collaboration between World’s Edge, Forgotten Empires, Tantalus MediaCaptureAge and Virtuoso gameswho has taken on the mission of remaking the original title and modernizing it, introducing several changes. The first and most obvious is the graphic leap. More than two decades do not pass in vain and we are changing the game simple graphics and polygonal models for something more in tune with our timeswhile managing to preserve the original aesthetics.
I don’t know if this has ever happened to you with a remake, but I remembered the game with these graphics 20 years ago, which is not real. The modeling and scenarios are designed to fully respect the original material, updating it and making emerge and merge what has been recorded in your memory with the new in a way that you almost do not realize. I leave you several screenshots where you can see the changes between the two versions closely. I also take this opportunity to say that the original soundtrack and dubbing have been redone. Personally, there are some voices that I preferred before, but the soundtrack manages to make me forget. The one from the original title was a delight and Told again
Gameplay and the new power system
As for the gameplay too we find newsbut to make this text understandable to as many people as possible, we will start at the beginning. The Age of Mythology is based on the Greek, Egyptian, Norse and Atlantean mythologies. For now the Chinese mythology of expansion Tale of the Dragon is left out, and its gameplay is that of a video game real time strategy. A key element is resource management, which we need to develop technologies, build buildings and train units. In addition, we possess divine powers, granted by the gods we worship each time we advance in age. Finally, there are the titans, gigantic and almost unstoppable beings. Taking this into account, we can now access the new features included in Told again.
One of the most important is in divine powers. In the original version, the powers had a one-time use, but In Told again we can reuse them as long as we invest the necessary favor. For example, if we use the power to cast a death ray from the sky, we can use it again by investing 75 favors and waiting about 90 seconds. The waiting time and cost vary depending on the power; the strongest are more expensive and require more time. We must keep in mind that there are civilizations that generate favor faster than others, for example the Nords generate it more slowly, so we can use fewer powers, at least at first.
Changes to Mythic Age and Villager Priority System
Changes have also been made to the Mythic Age, the most advanced, where divine powers will become cheaper and recover sooner, making the endgame more frenetic. On the downside, we find new additions to units and technologies in all civilizations, further expanding the already very diverse military repertoire available.
A new addition, although optional, is the Villager Priority System and Resource Automation. We can incentivize villagers to focus on resource gathering depending on the age, for example by prioritizing food more in the first age or gold in the third. We can also choose optimal settings if we want to use a lot of naval force, or focus on a more defensive, balanced or aggressive force. Finally, we can customize the percentages of each resource with a separate option. This is something that I consider very useful for the controller control, but also for people who need more accessibility or simply do not want to pay attention to this section of the game. It should be noted that, although it is a good complement, you can’t use it if you want it that way.
In the end, we end up with a set very funnyas much or more than the original game, the hours pass without you realizing it. The sensations of playing each game, creating your army, building that wall or that urban center, are practically the same as I remembered.
Content included in Age of Mythology Retold
Let’s move on to the content itself, The Age of Mythology Revisited includes everything the original and its expansion had to offereven keeps the cheats, adding several extras. We have the three official campaigns, “The Fall of the Trident”, “The Golden Gift” and “The New Atlantis”, with the possibility of downloading custom campaigns. As for the game modes, we have the classic skirmishes, where we customize the map, the rules of the game and the number of players. For multiplayer, we can play ranked games, quick games and custom games. There is also the classic map editor, copied from the original, even in the interface. As an extra, the game is compatible with mods so the possibilities increase a little.
It was also added as DLC a new norse god, Freyrwith a more defensive approach, but I haven’t had a chance to try it. Later, a new cooperative mode called Arena of the Gods and two other expansions will also be added, which They plan to include two additional pantheons to the game.
Accessibility options
Accessibility is a very important issue and the game offers a fairly remarkable variety of options. Can we adjust colors If we need it, even each color separately, then save multiple configurations. We can also change the text sizebeing able to choose between standard, large and extra-large fonts.
Then we have several specific options, like adjusting the minimap contrastthe colors of players depending on whether they are allies or not, or the application of a color outline to units, among others. Finally, there is the narratorwhich will tell us what is happening on the screen and read menus, conversations and more.
Technical section of Age of Mythology Retold on PC
Since we’re talking about options, let’s move on to PC options. The Age of Mythology Revisitedalthough playable on console, is designed for PC and comes with many possibilities in your configuration. To name a few, we can adjust the resolution, limit frames, change the quality of textures, water, terrain, reflections and dynamic lights, even weather effects on buildings. In addition, the game is compatible with ultra-wide resolutionsas evidenced by some of the images from the analysis. We can also adjust the camera scroll speed, the default zoom level, enable or disable the new villager priority system, or if we want, when selecting military personnel, villagers are not selected by accident, as well as adjust keyboard shortcuts and much more. . Finally, we can run a performance test within the game itself, which will give us more information.
Besides, I tell you that the game is going well. It is fluid and does not present, at least in my hours of play, any performance problems.
Ultimately, Age of Mythology Retold…
The Age of Mythology Revisited in a return to my childhoodIt goes back to those carefree days, it’s fun. A all the content of the original but with new features added like him new power supply system or the new units and technologiesThe gameplay is neat and the sensations while playing are very positive.
I think the game was made with love and it shows, nostalgia can blind me a bit, but I really have nothing bad to say, except maybe a few translation errors. The game does what it promisesbe The Age of Mythology but updated to our times. In the end, knowing that we can’t be totally objective, the analyses are opinions and in this case mine is very positive. If you liked the original, you’ll love this one, you’ll have it hundreds of hours in advance. On the other hand, if you are new to the genre or coming from other similar games, I am sure that you will have a good timehighly recommended.
