Horizon Forbidden West’s sales “flattened” after joining PS Plus, resulting in an estimated $85 million loss in retail revenue.
While the Game Pass still seems to be worthwhile for Microsoft – especially considering the sums that are being invested – Sony insists that such a concept will not work on the PlayStation. Sony is therefore not planning to make all games accessible via subscription in the near future and Horizon Forbidden West could be the best proof that Sony is right with this statement.
Documents obtained from the Insomniac leak show that sales and therefore revenue for Horizon Forbidden West almost completely collapsed after the game was made available on PlayStation Plus in its second year.
A graphic shows a comparison with its predecessor, Horizon Zero Dawn, and a similar picture emerges here. Although the number of players skyrocketed due to its availability on PlayStation Plus, sales figures suffered huge losses.
The documents also show that Sony expected Horizon Forbidden West to receive 30 percent of revenue in the second year compared to the previous year. After the game became available on PlayStation Plus, expectations were revised downwards to 9 percent. Instead of expecting $124 million as initially expected, the company only expected to earn around $35 million at this point. Although Horizon Forbidden West was financially successful overall, the game’s entry into PS Plus appears to have caused the company to lose sales in the high millions.
