Some new details have been revealed about The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, including a planned release for this fall.
The German development studio Daedalic Entertainment has been working on The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a new game based on the famous template by JRR Tolkien, since 2019 at the latest.
Most recently, the developer presented new impressions in December in the form of a cinematic trailer in which the tragic figure of Gollum plays the leading role.
The developer has now answered important questions about the game in an FAQ on Steam.
Thus we learn that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an official game of the brand and the characters and situations present in the game come from the official material from the world created by Tolkien. So the game and its content are canon, as they say, and even approved by the rights holder.
As for how the storylines of the books fit into the game, the developer says that much of the story takes place parallel to the earlier chapters of The Lord of the Rings. It covers Gollum’s early days in Mordor, his capture by Sauron and his interrogation by Gandalf.
Gollum makes an ideal character for an adventure, being a nimble creature that can climb, jump, and sneak past dangers and cling to advantageous spots. A twisted hobbit with two personalities and his vast knowledge of Middle-earth, he is also one of the most intriguing characters Tolkien created.
When you think of Gollum, you first imagine the creature from the Peter Jackson films. However, since the developer wanted to create his own interpretation and stay true to the literary original, the character doesn’t look like he does in the films.
Incidentally, the original voice is spoken by Wayne Forester, who has lent his voice to many characters in countless video games.
Daedalic continues to describe The Lord of the Rings: Gollum as an action-adventure with stealth and platforming elements. There is no connection to other video games and it tells a story from the books in which players will discover new and well-known characters.
The release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is currently slated for Fall 2022. There is no specific date. Gameplay and more details will be available soon.
The game will be available both digitally and commercially on disc. However, there will be no Collector’s Edition. But a Digital Deluxe Edition with still unknown content.
