Electronic Arts has halted early development of a Star Wars FPS action game at Respawn Entertainment.
Electronic Arts’ restructuring plans, which will result in the loss of around 670 jobs, also affect Respawn Entertainment.
The studio, known for the Titanfall, Star Wars Jedi and battle royale title Apex Legends, is also affected.
As EA President of Entertainment Laura Miele announced in a statement, early development of a Star Wars FPS action game that had been in the works since 2022 is being discontinued.
Miele wrote in a statement: “Respawn’s unique ability to connect with players and create exceptional gaming experiences is unmatched in the entertainment industry. As we looked at Respawn’s portfolio over the last few months, it became clear that the games our players are most excited about are Jedi and Respawn’s rich library of owned brands.”
“For this reason, we have decided to abandon early development of a Star Wars FPS action game and focus on new projects based on our own brands while supporting the existing games. It’s always hard to part ways with a project, and this decision doesn’t reflect the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion for the game. Giving fans the next installments of iconic franchises they want is the definition of blockbuster storytelling and the right place to focus.”
According to previous reports, the discontinued Star Wars game was said to have been inspired by Dark Forces, while there were later hints of a Mandalorian bounty hunter as the protagonist.
