The developers of the recently announced Gears of War: E-Day want to return to the horror of the original games.
In the early years, the dark atmosphere with horror elements was one of the great strengths of the Gears of War series. Although this approach was very popular with fans, later spin-offs increasingly moved away from it.
This is set to change with the recently officially announced Gears of War: E-Day. In conversation with IGN
“We looked at how people felt when they played Gears of War or any other game in the series – including Gears 4. But when people talk about what they remember about playing, the things that stood out to them, the feelings, it’s often about these dark, almost horror-like, scary moments.”
“So we took that feeling, that vision that everyone has in their head, and said, ‘This is the game we’re going to make.’ We’re going to make this game with all the skills we’ve learned, with all the technology we’ve developed, and we’re going to go hard at it. So part of the story is reintroducing the Locust into Gears as terrifying monsters that emerge from the ground. And then as the story progresses, you realize that they’re not just monsters, they’re a whole army that’s bigger than you think.”
