Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison is back and this time she’s traveling across the United States in an action-packed interactive first-person adventure
Phantom Fury, developed by Slipgate Ironworks and published by 3D Realms, brings back protagonist Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison from Ion Fury in a new first-person shooter that mixes intense action and a road movie narrative. After its first release on PC, the game now comes to Xbox, promising a mix of nostalgia and new emotions as it launches into a new generation of FPS games. If Ion Fury resembled Duke Nukem 3D, this one is more akin to the shooters of the year 2000.
A full-fledged sequel
The game’s narrative begins a few years after Shelly’s battle against Jadus Heskel.. Waking up from the coma with a new bionic arm, she quickly sets out on a mission to secure the demonic core, embarking on a journey that will take her across the United States. This principle sets the stage for a series of diverse and engaging environments, from the interior of an Albuquerque hotel to the streets of Chicago. The road movie aspect of the game gives it a unique flavor, making each location feel distinct and part of a larger adventure.
One of Phantom Fury’s most interesting features is its highly interactive world, especially when compared to the games that inspired it. Environments are full of interactive elements that make the world feel alivesince you can interact with computers, take helicopter rides and even play arcade machines. This level of interactivity adds a layer of immersion that wasn’t as common at the time. and which is often missing from current shooters.
Classic flavor gameplay
Phantom Fury gameplay is an interesting mix of action and tactical combat. With over two dozen weapons at our disposal, including new additions like armor-piercing shotguns and electrified foam guns, the game offers a variety of ways to take out enemies. The possibility of Upgrading and modifying these weapons further enhances the combat experience, allowing us to adapt the arsenal to our playstyle and try new things.. The inclusion of unlockable abilities and upgrades for Shelly’s bionic arm and suit also adds a layer of depth to the gameplay, making each encounter feel like something you might approach differently the next time we play .
The design of the enemies in Phantom Fury is worth highlighting, as it features a mix of cyborgs, soldiers, and mutants, each with unique abilities that challenge the player in different ways. The boss fights, in particular, are a lot of fun and push players to use different skills and weapons to fight them.
Regarding controls, Phantom Fury performs well with the Xbox controller. Fast-paced action demands quick reflexes and precise aim, and the game’s controls are responsive enough to meet these demands.
Technical and sound section
However, Phantom Fury has its drawbacks. Although the retro-inspired graphics and soundtrack add to its charm, some players may find the visual style a bit dated., since it’s not as “retro” as the previous game, but it’s not up to today’s standards either. Additionally, we encountered a few small bugs that may detract from the overall experience. It’s not that they break the game, but if left unfixed they can be frustrating.
The soundtrack, which combines retro music and more intense melodies in vibrant scenes, complements the chaotic atmosphere of the game very well. The sound effects are also crisp and punchy, enhancing the overall sensory experience of the game. The title is fully translated into Spanish.
Conclusions
In conclusion, Phantom Fury successfully blends retro aesthetics with modern gameplay to deliver a solid first-person shooter experience.. Its captivating storytelling, diverse environments, and highly interactive world set it apart in the popular FPS genre. Although it has its technical issues and sits in a bit of a no-man’s land between worlds and eras, the game’s strengths outweigh its weaknesses, so it’s worth adding to any Xbox Series FPS fan’s library.
