Chenghuang is a divine animal resembling a white fox with horse-like legs and two appendages resembling dragon horns protruding from its spine. There are various theories about the origins of the mythical creature: some claim that the animal came from Japan, others suggest that its hind humps indicate that it was a camel. In its entry in the Huainanzi, a Chinese text from the former Han period, it is equated with the divine horse Feihuang, giving rise to the phrase “the divine horse Feihuang gallops” to describe someone who achieves meteoric success in his career.
