was! takes place in the Bakamatsu era of 1867 in Japan. The country is mired in civil unrest due to widespread inequality and political tensions are high. Ryoma’s master falls victim to a political ruse, and his only lead on the attackers leads to the Shinsengumi, the ruling Tokugawa clan’s elite samurai police force. Vowing to avenge his master, Ryoma flees to the capital and covertly joins the Shinsengumi, where his path joins that of the revolution.
