The age of sorcery has ended, and now the age of war has arrived Conan Exiles. This new update will consist of three separate chapters, each bringing all new features, improvements and content to the game.
Age of War: Chapter One is out today, and along with brand new systems for collecting treasure and creating your own banners, we’re also introducing significant changes to combat balance.
Changes to stun and stamina
Designers make games fun by putting challenges in your way. Challenges can be any type of gameplay that blocks your progress: a boss enemy with desired loot, or a long wall climb with few rest points along the way. The closer we can get you to a tipping point where you’re just about to complete a challenge, the better victory feels! You may also hear game developers call this concept “Risk and Reward” or “Squeeze and Release” – it’s in every game you play!
A few years ago we gave NPCs temporary stun immunity because when enemies were attacked by multiple players, they never got a chance to act, resulting in them being stunned to death. This system should give enemies a twist in battle.
We’re removing this “stun break” system because it made combat feel inconsistent. Instead, we want to introduce squeeze and release in a natural and predictable way.
Enemies are no longer allowed to defy the rules of the stun. Most of the enemies you fight in the update are vulnerable to stun, and only certain high difficulty enemies are immune to it. To give your opponents their turn in battle, you will be effectively stunned when you run out of stamina and are unable to attack or dodge.
To achieve these natural turns in combat, we rebalanced Stamina. To allow for those brief moments when you can’t act but an enemy can, we had to increase the stamina cost of attacks.
Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean you’ll never have stamina. You now regenerate your stamina extremely quickly.
Enemies, weapons and repairs
We want you to feel like a warrior who can cut off heads and limbs when enemies attack you. If you’re fighting a few enemies, you should have some skill at dodging, blocking, or otherwise dodging attacks and incorporating your offense. Difficult encounters should require you to plan your approach.
To achieve this, we’ve made enemies deal more damage, so there’s more danger if they manage to attack. At the same time, we reduced the health of most enemies, which should make fights faster and more action-packed.
In addition, we have made significant changes to the weapons. Every time you upgrade your weapons, for example from stone to iron or iron to steel, the increase in power is significantly more noticeable. You can also find new items that are more powerful than what you can craft! This introduces our new item type, which we call unique items. Unique items are similar to those you can already craft, but have an additional spike of energy.
Legendary weapons are now at the forefront of the power stack and are arguably more powerful than their epic and unique counterparts, but with a new downside, legendary items can no longer be repaired.
Other items now lose their maximum durability when repaired, and since items no longer last forever, there are new motivations for you to venture back into the world to acquire powerful items.
The changes in Age of War aim to make combat feel more consistent and dynamic for everyone. More changes follow in chapters two and three. To name a few: greatly improved loot, revamped purges, and an all-new PvE siege where you attack an NPC stronghold.
