Octeto Studios and PQube Limited bring us Sky Oceans: Wings For Hire, a game that pays homage to classic JRPGs based on turn-based battles in the skies with a cartoon aesthetic.
In Sky Oceans: Wings for Hire, as the captain of your ship, you must gather the best crew possible during your long journey with the aim of defeating the alliance that keeps causing chaos, so we will have to travel to different destinations and help locals from problems caused by pirates and other gangs. We are your only hope.
Throughout our trip, we will have the opportunity to explore the cities we discover on foot. This is a small “open world” area in which we will be able to purchase items that will help us in combat, in addition to accepting new missions and thus obtaining. greater rewards. Of course, most of the time we will be in the air with our ship and with some crew members, either traveling to a new destination or fighting multiple enemies.
Story and gameplay
In the plot of Sky Oceans: Wings for Hire we find an interesting thread which attracts from the first moment, it is true that it is not entirely original but there are the ingredients which make us want to advance in the game, whether for the questions our character asks about his parents’ past and even about knowing who is behind the attack on his hometown.
Compared to what we are in command of most of the time, we will drive a ship of more or less size, which is quite simple, taking care not to crash too much because our lives will be affected and if we die , we will have to return to the previous checkpoint. When navigating cities and certain facilities on foot, the speed of the camera sometimes played tricks on us, making it complex to manipulate and making our exploration difficult.
air war
The most important aspect without a doubt of the game is linked to the aerial battles that we will face in a maximum of 4×4 in which we will have 4 crew members to fight against 4 other rivals in total. The combats are turn-based in which we can use a special shot that inflicts status damage (fire, ice, electric…) or a normal shell shot, perform a maneuver to dodge the enemy attack or use an inventory item.
We must see in each turn which action is the most decisive, because the more team members we have, the better our attack capacity will be, so we must keep an eye on the life bar of our allies. At the start of each turn we will know which crew member will be attacked, which will allow us to decide whether to heal them or not.
Each enemy has a specific weak status, so we must choose the type of shot to perform, in addition to taking into account the side effects they will cause. An important aspect to keep in mind is that depending on the enemy we are shooting at, we will have a success rate on impact, so we will not always succeed in the shot. It is appreciated to have the possibility to advance the speed of the turns of each character, because this confrontation or another can be too long and something can be heavy
Your crew is the most important thing
In this aerial adventure we will not be alone and as we progress through the story we will add new allies to our crew that will provide greater variety and advantages over the weapons available to use in combat . Each of them will give us different skills and shots to carry out different combat strategies.
Every time we complete each confrontation, team members will gain experience points and level up, which will make them gain some extra health points, improve their stats and get skill points to upgrade or unlock new types of special shots.
Graphics and sound
In Sky Oceans: Wings For Hire we have two very different faces when it comes to the visual aspect of the game. On the one hand, in the dialogues of the characters we have a very attractive comic visual style that stands out a little, with great quality of color and design. On the other hand, compared to the game’s environments, we found poorly placed textures, elements with popping and a somewhat slow loading of textures when running around a small island/town.
The sound aspect of the title is adequate, just as the soundtrack is well designed, being more tense in the fights and chases in the air, while it is calmer in the rest of the moments of the game when we travel through n No matter what city, let’s interact with our crew.
Findings from Sky Oceans: Wings For Hire
Sky Oceans: Wings For Hire is an interesting game to enter the JRPG genre since it is quite accessible in its mechanics, the combat being easy to learn. The story is interesting and attracts from the start of the title, it is true that there are moments of the adventure in which the progression is a little heavy.
The visual section of the game brings us a superb design of the UI images of the characters that we can see in combat and in conversations, with a very attractive comic style. This contrasts with the visual of certain elements of the decor in the cities, certain textures which load late and the lack of definition of the 3D model of the characters. The errors in the Spanish texts are quite a negative point since it seems that they did not devote time to a fundamental section
