Sony expects hardware sales to decline in the next fiscal year.
Sony has reported financial results for the third quarter (October to December 2023). It has now lowered its self-imposed targets for hardware sales in the games division of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The goal was to ship 25 million PlayStation 5 consoles by March 2024. After only 8.2 million consoles were added in the last quarter, the total is now only 16.4 million. Therefore, their target was revised downwards by 4 million to 21 million.
Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s president, COO and CFO, expects sales to decline in the next fiscal year. We are in the fifth year since the launch and have reached half of the current cycle.
Totoki said: “Regarding the PS5 hardware as it enters its fifth year since launch. Partly due to entering the second half of the console cycle, we aim to optimize sales with greater emphasis on balance with profit. We therefore expect a gradual decline in sales figures from the next financial year.”
