We just released our next big update for Spell break, Chapter 2: The FrakturOne of the new features we’re adding is NPCs that the player can fight against throughout the story and as part of the new Dominion capture and control game mode. Ordinarily, adding NPCs to a game that focuses on magical battles wouldn’t be particularly interesting or worth discussing, but Spell break is primarily a PvP game that has been live since September. So for us this is completely new territory.
It is worthless Spell break There are currently bots that new players can use to learn the mechanics of the game. When making NPCs, we therefore want to clearly distinguish them from existing bots. Bots are designed to fight much like a player and use a variety of spells and sorcery, as well as runes, to move around and make themselves a challenge for the players. NPCs, on the other hand, should not mimic player behavior very explicitly. The most obvious difference is that in most cases the NPCs are visually different from the players. They wear their own outfits and have special UI elements that indicate that they are NPCs.
As mentioned above, there are two scenarios in which players will encounter the new NPCs, and both have different requirements for how the NPCs behave. In story quests, the NPCs can often “ambush” a player after the player has done something. They move around the player and after a short while of mocking the player with animations, they attack. This short break is important because the player can see and understand what just happened (and what will happen!) And has the opportunity to “shoot first”. When we tested, we originally had the NPCs attacking instantly, which was not only more difficult but also a lot less fun because you were immediately put on your back foot instead of becoming the attacker.
The second place you meet NPCs is in Dominion, where they serve two purposes. The first is that they act as a resource for players, drop loot, and provide currency. Players must consider respawn times and weigh the opportunity cost of chasing the NPCs against controlling the zones. The second purpose is for the NPCs to act as an obstacle to deal with so that they don’t overwhelm the players with magic while the players try to conquer and control the zones. Dealing with incoming attacks adds an extra layer to players’ strategy for capturing the zones.
In both the story quests and Dominion, the NPCs themselves are pretty weak. This allows us to use them as cannon fodder, which gives the player an increased sense of power. Taking out a pack of NPCs with a single well-placed boulder is incredibly enjoyable. We’re also starting to experiment with what it means to be a difficult NPC encounter Spell break without only increasing the statistics of the NPC, but from a behavioral point of view. These are a number of challenges that we are actively investigating.
We’re excited to explore the idea of how NPCs fight against players Spell break and see how the players react. Our second chapter starts today and you can fight the new enemies both in the story and in Dominion Spell break of the Xbox Store
