To my surprise, he is my shock of the year 2022. why Vampire Survivor makes it so addicting ? How is it that such a rudimentary game, as if it were made of three strings, can catch me like this Glued for 55 hours without seeing the time go by. The most obvious answers would be its simple avoidance and build-up mechanics. The fact that almost every run unlocks new characters or objects? Its presence in Game Pass? Hmm… It’s certainly not foreign, because that’s how I discovered it. But I have the impression that these are only necessary but not sufficient explanations.
And yes Vampire Survivor did something else tell us, deeper, more atavistic? And if we weren’t ahead, consciously or not a simple conversation that brings us back to what makes humanity great, to his mortality, his fragility, yet ready to transcend his condition? Well, out of the blue it seems far-fetched. But let’s stop for a few seconds and keep in mind the prophetic aspect of Vampire Survivor : From the beginning of the game our time is running out, we will die at the end of the level anyway. We have 30 minutes to achieve what we are here for. Also, we don’t know what we’re going to do with this bunch of rough-hewn pixels. A bit like the rest of us, simple buildings of fugitive atoms on a planet lost among so many others to revolve around falsely eternal stars without further explanation. In fact, we know what we’re doing here: We prepare future runs or future generations…
In the first attempts it is necessary to fail here, to learn to leave the other characters with new powers, to somehow tame this hostile world until we reach the limits. Even death is inevitable at first, even if you make it up well after 30 minutes. With it, In a few hours, this game summarizes the search for humanity. It made me dizzy when I realized it… And I told myself I was over-intellectualizing the mess. I do not know.
What is certain is that with not much, Vampire Survivor shaped me for life. And to say that this is just the beginning, because at the beginning of 2023 we still haven’t found the alpha vampire who continues to relentlessly elude us. Future DLCs will come and grab us for a while look for him. A bit like humans, we all run after our own alpha vampire…but we still have to agree on what it is. But our time is limited, so we have more than thirty minutes, but as sometimes with bad luck, a crappy physique, risky decisions, an unsafe path, we are quickly overtaken by the mower. GAME OVER.
