“I am very proud of Shattered Space. “We all are”
Bethesda’s first major DLC for Starfield arrived last week, and after some criticism received from media and players, The studio’s design director has responded to some of the criticism made about the Shattered Space expansion.
In a lengthy Twitter thread, Emil Pagliarulo of Bethesdaresponded to a fan who is starting to question some of the studio’s decisions, both with Starfield and the Shattered Space expansion. The fans’ questions seem to make perfect sense, which has sparked a more healthy debate on the topic than what’s usually seen on social media.
To sum things up, Bethesda fan thought recent developer interview was ‘very insensitive’ to criticism
“Twitter/X has never been a place for polite discourse, but I’d like to address what I can. I don’t like to leave fans hanging. In fact, I often say more than I should. There’s a reason we have a community team. But I think it’s important to build a bridge with developers.
First of all, maintenance. As a design director, I am sometimes asked or requested to do interviews. I loved doing that, representing the designers and the studio. Considering how hard and passionately they worked on Shattered Space, they deserved nothing less.
Optimism and enthusiasm are quite common in interviews. And I’m usually pretty optimistic and enthusiastic (about games) by nature. That being said, my optimism is in no way meant to disrespect dissatisfied fans. That’s not how it works. I’m also very proud of Shattered Space. We all are. Most of the missions and levels were created by designers who worked on previous Bethesda games and DLC, dating back to Morrowind. They are good at what they do and it shows.
If anyone hasn’t played Shattered Space and loves Starfield, I think they’re missing something. If someone has played Shattered Space and doesn’t like it, that makes me sad. But let them know that there are a lot of people who love it too. Maybe it’s a question of expectations. The fans want a lot and we do everything we can to please them. Here’s what I can tell you: no one, and I mean no one, at Bethesda is congratulating themselves by ignoring our players.
In addition to Shattered Space, we’ve spent a lot of time this year addressing community issues and making fixes. We will continue to do so and listen to our fans at all times. We create these games for all of you. Starfield is a huge game and we need time to work out the kinks. We move as quickly and safely as possible. Game development is always complicated, but with a game as big as Starfield, every patch could potentially break something else.
In conclusion, let me say this: I love games. I love Bethesda games. I’ve been playing it since the Terminator days. All I or anyone here wants to do is make these games and then improve them. Without ego. Without arrogance. Just a lot of hard work and appreciation for our fans.
If you want to get a better idea of how the exchange went, feel free to head over to Twitter and take a look. As you can see, Emil summarizes that all Bethesda wants to make is the type of games it is known for.: “No ego. Without arrogance. Just a lot of hard work and appreciation for our fans.
We in the Xbox community have made no secret of what we think of Starfield: Shattered Space. You can see and hear why in our full analysis we did in the last podcast.
