The ambitious open-world MMORPG mix Pioner is being developed for Xbox Series X/S and is shown in a new trailer today.
Another Q&A with CEO Aleksandr Nikitin unearthed new details about upcoming genre-mix Pioner. It’s been almost a year since the last sign of life. In addition to a PC implementation, the game is also being developed for the current Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles. However, the developer has ruled out a release for last-gen consoles for the time being.
“At the moment we have no plans to release the game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4. However, we are not ruling out these releases in the future as one of the game’s post-release scenarios.”
The focus on the current consoles and the PC naturally has its advantages: the performance of the title does not have to be adapted to the old hardware. Things are not looking good for cross-play at the moment. There is a build for a cross-play system, but at a very early stage.
“Cross-platforming is built into the game’s framework and will inevitably appear in the release version or over time, but cross-play between PC and console players is currently completely absent and in the early stages of design.”
The game will initially run on Unreal Engine 4 when it is released. Nikitin already has plans to switch the graphics framework to Unreal Engine 5 after its release.
“There are plans to move to Unreal Engine 5, but they are not currently on the agenda. Our current goal is an optimized release version that could be disrupted by the sheer number of radical, albeit positive, innovations in Unreal Engine 5. We decided not to take the risk and only time will tell if that decision was the right one.”
The game can best be compared to STALKER 2 Heart of Chornobyl, but in Pioner you don’t play alone, you form groups and clans to fight your way through the world. This happens in the usual MMORPG manner on online servers with other players. In addition to dungeons and raids, the zones for the player-versus-player areas will be a central point in your clan’s progress.
A new trailer for Pioner was released today, which we have of course linked for you.
