Convicted Switch hacker Gary Bowser was released early from prison for good behavior.
In February 2022, a court sentenced hacker Gary Bowser to 40 months in prison. Bowser had been creating and selling hacked consoles, including the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS, since 2013 as a member of the Xecuter hacker group.
Now Bowser is released early due to good behavior and is currently preparing for his return to Canada at a detention center in Tacoma, Washington.
In addition to the prison sentence, the hacker was also sentenced to $14.5 million in damages, of which $10 million primarily goes to Nintendo.
Bowser gives in one interview after his release that he had reached an agreement with Nintendo that he would have to give up a maximum of 25 to 30 percent of his monthly gross income to the Japanese company. So far, he has paid Nintendo $175 for his work in prison.
Since Bowser is 53 years old, it seems very likely that he will pay Nintendo for the rest of his life and will ultimately never be able to fully pay off his debt.
