Nintendo Switch hacker Gary Bowser sees his prison sentence as a warning to other would-be hackers.

In February 2022, Nintendo hacker Gary Bowser was sentenced to 40 months in prison for his activities as part of the hacker group “Xecuter”.

Together with the group, Bowser had been developing and selling workaround devices since 2013 that allowed illegal ROMs to be played on Nintendo consoles such as the Switch or 3DS.

Due to good behavior, Bowser was released early in April 2023. What remains is the damages to be paid in the amount of 14.5 million US dollars, which the hacker is allowed to pay off as much as possible every month through a percentage of his salary thanks to an agreement with Nintendo.

In an interview with The guard Bowser now says he sees his conviction as a warning to other would-be hackers. He also gives Nintendo little hope that the claim for damages will be met:

“The verdict was like a message to other people who are still out there that if they get caught, they will do a hard time.”

“I’ll pay them what I can, which won’t be a lot of money, that’s for sure.”
