To talk about Terminator is to talk about one of the greatest icons that the history of cinema has produced. But its importance does not stop there since the figure of this cyborg has transcended the big screen and, in addition to series, books, etc., the world of video games has also been nourished by its science fiction proposal and of his rich world which began in 1984.
NOW, 40 years after the release of the first film, we get a new video game in the saga. Under the name of Terminator Dark Fate Defiance and edited and developed by Slide (the authors of other games in the Warhammer 40,000 saga). The past the 21st of February This new iteration comes to us in a genre that we are not used to seeing: real-time strategy. And how could it be otherwise, For the moment, this only concerns the PC, the platform on which these types of games tend to be most successful. Let us continue our analysis.
History
The game, as can be deduced from its title, takes place in the universe of the Terminator Dark Fate film, that is to say that the heart of the story will be the war between humanity and the machines of the Legion.
The pretext of the individual campaign will be to play as a commander of the Founders and lead our people against the Legion and its goal of annihilating the rest of humanity remaining on the planet.
Even if The most important thing in an RTS is usually not the story
On the other hand, if we leave the campaign aside, in the multiplayer and skirmish modes, you can choose between three playable factions (Founders, Movement or Legion). What I liked the most is that we have a narrative that will affect the course of history, since depending on your decisions, some can be enemies or allies, giving rise to different missions that otherwise we do not have. would not have played.
Use your leadership skills
Like everything RTS it’s worth its salt, Terminator too follow their guns And your job as a commander will be very important, choosing among your positions, unit capabilities and tactics used to achieve your objectives.
Even if some RTS allow, in the end, to implement everything, this is not the case for Terminator Dark Fate Defiance
Another aspect that will be key to your success in this game will be the resource management. Being very limited in the storyline, you will have to ration everything you collect a lot and allocate it wisely if you don’t want to find yourself rushed in the moments when you need it most.
The shadow of Company of Heroes is long
I have to say that the playable base of the Slitherine title is mvery similar to what we saw in recent games in the Company of Heroes saga. We will always order a small number of units and their placement and coverage will be very important, because losing a single man represents a big loss since “replacing” him will either be very difficult (due to resource scarcity) or very far away . far (because it is far from our base).
In the campaign we will have missions of different types, with these objectives also being carried over from other previous games. There will be no shortage of “tower defense” type missions, even those that require a little more leisurely exploration across the country. We will also have vehicles at our disposal, which will be very important in the final parts of the game and which, with their modular destruction system, add a certain variety and complexity never seen before.
Another very interesting addition is the a certain “rolero” touch which is added by the possibility of recruiting more staff and how to make them evolve. We will have at our disposal improvements which, obviously, will cost us resources, so we will have to choose carefully which units to improve and how to do it. In addition to the campaign mode, we also have skirmish modes (very fun and with a more casual tone) and online multiplayer)
Eventually, Terminator Dark Fate Defiance takes the playable bases of games like Company of Heroes and It adds a touch here and there that makes it partly different.
Performance and visual
As for performance of the game, I must say that it is quite neat and I haven’t noticed any bugs or graphical problems. I also have to say that the PC I played it on more than met the recommended requirements and you’d have to do the litmus test of running it on a more modest PC to see how the optimization was.
The game, although not officially, is compatible with Steam Deck. I must also say that I only ran it to test its compatibility and did not delve deeper into the game since I am in favor of playing this type of game, for convenience, sitting in front of the PC.
As for visual aspect, conforms correctly. Even if there are certain aspects that are very successful (like the “special” effects and explosions), the detail of certain units or the textures of certain buildings leave something to be desired. The music accompanies and fulfills its role but we will not have melodies that we will remember once our game is finished, as is generally the trend in the genre.
Terminator Dark Fate Defiance analysis: conclusions
Although it can be considered a niche game and a “coffee for coffee lovers”, It will appeal to anyone who enjoys the strategy of games like Company of Heroes. Adding some new features to the Relic saga but without the mastery of execution that its authors possess, its campaign will entertain those who want a solid RTS for more than 20 hours. And if you are a Terminator fan, you will appreciate the whole setting and its universe even more.
Pro.
- Entertaining and stimulating at the same time
- Recreates the Terminator universe very well
Contra.
- Graphically something could be improved
- Maybe it’s too inspired by Company of Heroes
