After more than twenty hours Gotham Knight, I can finally give you my opinion on this! After all… I would have to agree with myself first. I find the game enjoyable to play but way below the atmosphere Batman Arkham. Bruce Wayne is dead and it shows. All in all, I really enjoy traveling the universe and doing crazy combos with Robin, Batgirl, Redhood, and Nightwing, but… It lacks that certain something that makes the other games magic. The problem is that I can’t put my finger on it.
In Gotham Knights there are good…
The story seems believable, Batman dies, the criminals feel powerful and continue to take hold of the city. Nature abhors a vacuum, think garbage… It’s even worse. So who will stop them? Without counting on the genius of Bruce Wayne, who foresaw the blow by recording a video: “If you hear this, I’m dead”. Original? No way. But let’s go on, it’s just a detail, our four protagonists meet at the bell tower to form a dream team. Only downside, if you play alone you only have one superhero who saves the city every night. The others will sleep or what do I know? What do you do !? Fortunately, the cooperative is there to make this story more believable.
As a matter of fact, Gotham Knights stands out from its predecessors with the addition of cooperation. If everyone would love to do the Batman and Robin duo, it won’t be possible. However, each character has their strengths and weaknesses. So Batgirl will be strong in infiltration where Redhood will be a real tank in close combat. The finesse of the movements of some and the brutality of the punches of others are also brilliantly implemented in the fight scenes. It’s beautiful, it’s acrobatic and we want more.
Also, the game is great in the broadest sense. The cutscenes are well shot, the French version is a pleasant surprise, and Gotham City is fun to browse. At least… The city is great, there are nice corners, but you have to like rain, and of course at night.
And at least good…
Argh, while the game is still beautiful and fun to play through at times, I was hampered by many…awkward moments. In order to go faster, each protagonist has their own Batcycle, which is identical for all, giving a false impression of speed since the game is capped at 30fps. Then, if you’re not new to the city of Gotham, you know that there are huge buildings… These aren’t very pleasant to climb. Also, I was surprised to see that all members have the same ability to climb, they all have the same grip. In addition, it is impossible to plan as was the case Batman Arkham. At the very least, after 25 hours of play, I may not have unlocked the ability, and it’s sorely lacking.
Flaws include the fact that the villains are bad because they are evil. I know it’s a lot of repetition, but it doesn’t have originality or finesse… What then bothered me tremendously, and the Word is weak, is the Bible that the works of provide Batman Arkham. There are many references to super villains in Gotham Knight and the game highlights them by highlighting them. Apart from a brief description of the object, we do not have all the biographies that were available in the ancient works. When you encounter Scarface’s doll, all you’re told is that it’s Scarface’s doll and that it “looks frightening”. Where in previous games we had a much more precise and generous heel.
Finally the story falls from our arms. This title is divided into “nights” in which you will have to complete many side quests such as solving crimes, eliminating thugs, solving crimes, eliminating thugs, sometimes we solve crimes, sometimes we eliminate thugs… So, yes, the fights are exciting, but at least I felt like I was living an endless day an endless night. Also, it lacks any justification, the CGPD wrongly attacks us from the start, but even by helping them, it still wants to stop us, why? It’s not explained…
Is it good or bad in the end?
such a guilty pleasureI like playing Gotham Knight, I appreciate the combat phases, the plot, but I don’t like the lack of villain development. However, if you have a friend to share the adventure with, you will have great evenings, that’s for sure! However, you have to love the universe because for once, not having a reference is a bad goal… but a nice laundry room for your Batman cosplay.
