Clever puzzles, funny dialogues, satirical stories and the intimate relationship between a police officer and his partner form the basis for a good one Darkside detective Fall and that means we try to do something new and exciting for every new case that comes out. From inverted vampires to ghost gangsters, the Darkside detective The formula will often be: “Take something familiar and turn it upside down.” Therefore in the first of our bonus cases for The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark, we’re returning to make our second Christmas suitcase! Ghosts of Christmas Happened released December 24th and I thought it might be interesting to take a closer look at why we returned for this first post-Christmas bonus case.
What it could take to delve a little deeper into this darkside ethos! One of the core ideas of Darkside detective will always be a certain referential way of telling stories. The dark side detective assumes you’ve seen the classics. You understand what a vampire is, what ghost hunters are, the rules behind seeing ghosts, and how gremlins work. We do a lot of worldbuilding to make sure Twin Lakes is compelling and unique (often by taking these concepts and finding things to make fun of), but any Darkside case will pick up on the classics. It assumes you are familiar with the culture so that it can then make fun of the culture. Obviously, Darkside is more than just these things. It’s also the little puzzles that break up the dialogues and add a little game to your detective story. It’s also just the undying friendship between a detective and his affable best friend. But the world of Darkside will always be a world of creatures, gadgets, and brews that appear in our culture.
This is the first answer to the question: Christmas plays a big role in our culture and is good fodder for satire. For those in need of a refresher, Buy Hard was the Christmas suitcase in the first case Darkside detective Game that focuses on Santa, Krampus and the immortal war between them. Christmas is a pretty big topic. It covers Santa Claus, Elves, and the North Pole, for sure, but it also includes “A Christmas Carol” and “Home Alone”. It covers the way we celebrate our families, as well as the specifics of the gift-giving myth and holiday tradition. And this size is suitable for a small game dev team like ours, which looks at it and says: “I still have a great idea for a Christmas cover!” Ghosts of Christmas Happened (which is spiritually more inspired by Charles Dickens than any fables about Kris Kringle) thus covers a lot of new territory and offers perhaps the most complex puzzle in the history of the series.
The second answer is a little more focused: Christmas also offers us a great opportunity to enter the big world of The dark side detective. While creating new myths and lore for Darkside is always a big focus for any new case, it helps Darkside go back to some of the older locations and hang out with older characters, more than just a parody or parody of those kind of stories. Darkside has its own world, its own continuity, and its own characters to call back to, and just like the theme of “A Christmas Carol” is for Scrooge, getting in touch with the people in his life, it is a great opportunity for us to connect some of these supporting characters like Wang, Nigel, Norm Bearson, Gary, Gail, Buzz and Patricia Dooley. What does Pier 13 look like in winter? How much is Wang enjoying his cat-and-mouse relationship with McQueen and Dooley? How was that sweet meeting between Gary and Gail? All of these are little stories that we can answer when the Christmas suitcase is rolling and a little more sentimental.
Besides, if The dark side detective reminiscent of an episodic TV show, it is only fitting that there be a Christmas special every season, just like your favorite sitcoms or science fiction shows do. When all of that puffs up The dark side detective is your style that i would recommend to you? Ghosts of Christmas Happened. If all of the bloat isn’t your style, I’d recommend trying it out as well. Everyone should really check it out. And feel free to share your thoughts on the case after playing on our Discord, Facebook and Twitter on December 24th!
