The Need for Speed saga has seen numerous remakes and fan enhancements in recent years, and now it’s the turn of one of the most beloved games in the series: Need for Speed Underground 2 Remake. Although the original game is over 18 years old, the updated version with Unreal Engine 5, it gives it a new shine that could keep it relevant for another 18 years.
The first impression you get when seeing the game is the visual transformation it has undergone. The use of Unreal Engine 5 has completely changed the aesthetic of the game and the addition of ray tracing gives it a touch of realism that is difficult to ignore. However, it is true that sometimes the game can appear a little “overlit”, with too many reflections and glare which can be a little disorienting.
That would be Need for Speed Underground 2 Remake with Unreal Engine 5
But where the improvement is really noticeable is in the car models. The detail and precision with which the vehicles have been recreated is impressive, and you can see the effort that has gone into making the game as authentic as possible. And despite all the visual improvements, the gameplay remains intact, with that unique touch that made Underground 2 so beloved back in the day.
It is interesting to compare this version with other parts of the saga that have also been updated with Unreal Engine 5, such as Need For Speed Most Wanted and Need For Speed Carbon. Although these games are more modern than Underground 2, the updated version of the classic keeps pace with its successors and, in some cases, even surpasses them in terms of detail and realism.
