The medium is a third-person psychological horror game that tells the story of Marianne, a clairvoyant who can live in two realities at the same time: our world and the world of ghosts. The mediumThe hallmark of this is a mechanic that we refer to as a “dual reality” game, which you can find on Xbox Series X | today S, PC and with Xbox Game Pass.
At certain points in the game you play in the material and the spiritual world at exactly the same time and control both avatars at the same time. It’s both a storytelling and a gameplay mechanic that defines both the main theme of the game and the exploration and solving of puzzles. When you are in dual reality, the screen is split either vertically or horizontally. Since both worlds are being rendered at the same time, we needed powerful hardware like the X | Xbox series S consoles to unlock the full potential of dual reality. However, we still have questions about why the game needs a next generation platform even though the split screen has been with us for a long time.
The short answer is, what we do with dual reality is very different from multiplayer split screen. The long answer … well, read on.
Most other games that support split-screen display two different instances of the same location. in the The mediumThe real and the spiritual world look completely different and use their own graphic elements such as models or textures. This is much more demanding in terms of storage, storage, and rendering costs.
In addition, effects such as motion blur or ambient occlusion must be calculated and rendered twice. All in all, the game requires a significant amount of VRAM and fast memory, much faster than the previous generation of hardware. Although it may look similar in screenshots or trailers, the dual reality of the game just works technically different and is much more demanding in terms of performance than a “regular” split screen.
We worked on it The medium and the idea of dual reality for a couple of years and it’s a big moment for us to finally let the game and its innovative mechanics into the hands of the players. Before entering the dark corridors of the abandoned Niwa Hotel, I can only add … enjoy the mystery!
The medium is now available for Xbox Series X | S, PC, and available with Xbox Game Pass.
