Nautical nostalgia
Sitting down with a bowl of cereal and an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants was a childhood ritual for me and millions of others. With over 20 years on the air it’s a show we grew up with but never gotten out of.
Because it’s such a popular IP, we knew it was of paramount importance to recreate it as faithfully as possible. The SpongeBob SquarePants Special Pack. is a love letter to the source material, created in the distinctive style of the original cartoon in collaboration with the team at Nickelodeon.
Compared to the base game and special packs we previously released, SpongeBob SquarePants’ visual identity is quite different. Being able to explore Bikini Bottom in three dimensions while maintaining the 2D aesthetic is a welcome novelty.
About “Cartoonize” PowerWash simulator, explains lead artist Torger Newland: “Research was key; We’ve spent a lot of time analyzing how SpongeBob (on the TV show) is drawn and painted. Most of our results are achieved through texturing. So it was important that we could reproduce what was on the show. We discovered many interesting nuances, such as Squidward’s house, which looks like a dry brush on canvas. We ended up using several sets of gouache-style brushes that we used repeatedly to get the right look.”

SpongeBob SquarePants and PowerWash Simulator have one thing in common: neither of them takes themselves too seriously. In an underwater world where marine life talks, campfires burn, and beaches…exist, we chose to ignore many of the underwater pressure washer’s physical effects – aside from adding bubbles (we couldn’t resist!) – and chose to sticking with our tried-and-true super-satisfying wash physics.
So we didn’t tinker with the physics, we redesigned your gear, your outfit and, well, you!
Exclusively for this special pack, we’ve given the PowerWash character model a nautical makeover. With a custom-made pressure washer that rivals even Sandy Cheeks’ best inventions, you’ll fit perfectly into the crowd as a true bikini bottom guy.
Torger explains, “By studying the Bikini Bottomites (the residents of Bikini Bottom) and their characteristics, we were able to come up with a number of potential character models. We have also designed new backpack pressure washers that feel at home in the world. We worked closely with Nickelodeon to get the end results just right.”
We can’t wait for the Xbox community to get excited about this new expansion. It was another labor of love for our team to bring Bikini Bottom to life… and then cover it in dirt. over to you!
