Microsoft seems to be working on a project that could revolutionize the way we play, everything indicates a portable Xbox console with the brand’s entire catalog and Game Pass. While there is no official confirmation, recent statements from Xbox boss Phil Spencer suggest that the company is considering developing a portable version of the Xbox console. In fact, we have already seen the first hints about this in leaked promotional material.
In an interview with Polygon, Spencer shared that the Microsoft team is working on “different types of hardware and different ways to play,” which has raised a lot of expectations among fans of the brand. He also mentioned that the goal would be to improve the experience of playing Microsoft titles in portable format, either on existing consoles or on your own devices.
AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme and XDNA 2 AI Could Be the Key
The question is, what kind of hardware could power this new portable console? One possible answer could lie in the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, which is expected to hit the market in early 2025. During a Q&A session at IFA 2024, an AMD representative revealed that the company is working on the Z2 Extreme, which could have similar features to the Ryzen AI 300 chips, such as Zen 5 cores, integrated RDNA 3.5 GPUs, and an XDNA 2 AI engine.
If AMD can deliver on its promises during the Q&A, then the Z2 Extreme could potentially improve the next generation of portable consoles. This could be particularly interesting for gamers looking for a more powerful and efficient gaming experience on the go. According to an AMD representative:
We have our Z1 Extreme and Z1 on the market today, right? We’re working on the Z2. We’re working on that with several OEM ecosystem partners, and it’s probably coming to market in early 2025.
It is important to remember that nothing is confirmed yet and Microsoft has not made any official statement about the existence of an Xbox portable console. However, Phil Spencer’s statements and the information provided by AMD suggest that something is brewing, in fact, they are usually partners with a fairly extensive relationship, Xbox One and Xbox Series hardware is AMD’s business. We can’t wait to see what happens in the future and how it could affect the video game industry.
