Hello! We are very happy about the start Harmony: The case of reverie Available today on Xbox Series X|S. It’s a narrative-driven adventure with two colorful worlds, a diverse cast of characters, and an immersive story that we hope you all enjoy!

Harmony: The case of reverie was born out of a single concept: to be able to recognize upcoming narrative branches and respond accordingly by making the desired choices. Out of this mechanic emerged the idea of dreams as fuel for future action, as a lens through which we can see and analyze the complex world we live in and nurture. We knew from the start that the game would be set in a slightly futuristic world, close enough to ours to explore contemporary themes, but far enough away to give us more creative freedom.

Building Reverie, home of ancient god-like beings called the Aspirations, was the next logical step in connecting game mechanics and narrative intent, but it was also the most difficult. Reverie and the Aspirations was intended to give Polly (and you) a broader, almost metaphysical, view of the world.

But we didn’t want this empire to feel overly divine: it had to be fragile and atrophied in the face of capitalism’s dreamless system. It was also our solution to bridge the gap between this wide-ranging gameplay, befitting of big choices and even bigger consequences, and the intimate story we wanted to tell.

We decided to portray Brittle (the real world) as a bright, living world where social issues are hidden from the eye. On the other hand, the lands of Reverie are cold, arid, and strewn with ruins reminiscent of our past civilizations, reflecting Brittle’s absence of dreams. It all serves the idea that dreams are the place to find hope when all seems lost, and that great things can emerge from the void. Thus, Reverie serves as a series of avenues to help Polly navigate her complicated life, and the Aspirations as a guide to help her find her own voice.

We based the Aspirations on some mythological and psychological theories, including Spiral Dynamics and pop culture classics like “Sandman” and “Inside Out.” They needed to be broken and feel real, not like almighty Greek gods. It helped give them more character and portrayed them as magical, unpredictable beings who, despite being immortal, still struggle with their own community. Their struggles mirror what is happening in Brittle and help connect Polly’s quest to that of the Aspirations.

We found it difficult to flesh out two worlds at once with our narrative system. The difficulty was balancing the narrative between Brittle and Reverie, and it took some rework before we decided to make Brittle the main location of the game. So when Reverie’s story comes to the stage, it feels important – weaving threads that touch humanity – and intimate as it is connected to Polly’s personal history.

We hope you enjoy the story and get as much inspiration from it as Polly did from Reverie on her journey. you can play Harmony: The case of reverie starting today on Xbox Series X|S.
