Historical Representation in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and Its Controversy
Ubisoft has recently undergone some changes to its project portfolio. Earlier this year, the company announced the cancellation of development on The Division Heartland, a game that was first announced for 2021 and was in development at Red Storm. At the time, it was reported that members of the team from that game were being transferred to other projects, such as Rainbow Six: Siege and XDefiant.
Even though Ubisoft has canceled some projects, it still has several major games in development that will be released in the coming months. One of them is Star Wars Outlaws, an open-world game developed by Massive Entertainment, which will officially launch on August 30. Another notable game is Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, which will be released on November 15th

The portrayal of Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows has sparked some controversy, as some feel it ignores the true history of feudal Japan. Ubisoft has responded to these criticisms by arguing that it is a game with a fictional story, rather than a 100% accurate historical document. While the company has attempted to defend its decision, the controversy is likely to continue until the game’s release.
