If you are a fan of JRPGs and tactical games, don’t look far, this analysis will interest you. In recent days, I have had the opportunity to enjoy Unicorn Overlord, the new title that comes to us from Vanillaware and Atlus, and which, for me, is already It has become one of the best games of this year.
We are faced with a complex and addictive role-playing and strategy adventure that will take us to the lands of Fevrith, a vast world which, after the betrayal of General Valmore, is under the rule of the new and powerful Zenoiran Empire. We will put ourselves in the shoes of Prince Alain, heir to the kingdom of Cornia and who has spent the last 10 years hiding on an island fleeing the Empire’s control.
However, the Zenoirano’s control is virtually absolute and they will eventually find us. With nowhere to escape or hide, and with new determination, you resolve to end the Empire’s reign of terror. Fortunately for Alain, he will not be alone on this long and winding road that awaits him, since He will have help from his colleagues and a wide range of allies. that we will find during our adventure.

Technical section
Unicorn Overlord stands out for several of its aspects, and its technical and artistic section is undoubtedly one of them. The title It has a superb graphics section thanks to the superb designs of both the multiple characters who will join our ranks and the different enemies and NPCs that we will encounter. Its artistic section is simply sublimecreating a truly beautiful and vibrant universe that completely absorbs the player without the need for major technical deployments.
The title has arrived fully translated and we can choose if we want to put the voices in Japanese or English, but something worth highlighting is the wonderful localization of the title and the wonderful work done by the Spanish translation studio. We see this in the thousands of conversations that we will have with our companions or with other NPCs and in which we will find real gems.
As for the musical section, the game does not disappoint. It’s not surprising if we take into account that the OST comes to us from Basiscape, responsible for the soundtrack of the vast majority of Vanillaware titles.
Gameplay
We fully enter into what makes Unicorn Overlord, a gem for fans of tactical role-playing games, its gameplay. And first of all we must make it very clear that we are facing a pure and simple tactical role-playing game title, where battles happen automatically and the result will depend on how we configure and equip our troops before the battle.
We will begin our adventure with Alain, who after leaving the island where he was exiled will become the Commander of the Liberation Army and will begin his adventure to liberate the different lands of Fevrith from the control of the Empire. At first we will have few troops under our command, but as we advance we will add new and powerful allies.
In true JRPG style we find a vast world that we can explore freely and in which we will find different missions and side activities that we can carry out, however, to advance and explore we will have to recover these lands from the Zenorians. For that, We will have to fight using the different units we have at our disposal in our army.
These units are made up of different characters, and we will decide what types of characters will make up a unit and their position in it. This is the most important part and to which we must pay more attention if we want to succeed in combat, because different combinations will have different advantages and disadvantages, and it will be our duty as commander to adapt our units to each situation.
At first we will have very few units consisting of only two characters in each unit, but as we gain honor by completing battles and missions we will be able to increase both the number of units and the number of characters that make up each unit. , thus having a practically infinite range of combinations and possibilities.
It is not surprising if we take into account the fact that we found more than 60 characters and 40 classes available (80 if we take into account that each class can evolve). Even though the game is very friendly to new players and explains everything step by step, it is true that there comes a point where it can be overwhelming. But for fans of the tactical role, this is where we find our greatest pleasure, as we will spend hours creating units that adapt to every situation imaginable.
But for our greatest pleasure, it does not stop there, since, dDepending on each character’s equipment and skills, they will adapt better or worse with other characters; another nuance that we will have to take into account when creating ours since these changes will directly affect the tactics of our characters, which would be the equivalent of the abilities of each one and which will determine what they will do in combat depending on how we have configured it.
For example, Alain has a tactic with which he recovers life every time he kills an opponent, because if in the tactics menu we indicate the lowest HP commands, Alain will automatically use his ability with the opponent having the less HP, thus ensuring the activation of its ability.
There are several simple examples of unit combinations that take advantage of each class’s particular abilities. A clear example would be the Lord in the front row and the Knight in the back, since the Lord can absorb damage from attacks with his shield while the Knight focuses on finishing off the infantry; Another slightly more complex example would be Lord at the forefront and Witch at the rear, since thanks to the Witch’s Magical Grant ability, the Lord’s Noble Edge tactic can also deal magic damage.
As I mentioned before, Nearly 100% of our combat success rests on the creation of our unit, But there’s no point in having large units if you don’t know how to lead them properly. In Overlord Unicorn we will fight on different maps consisting of our main base and usually different enemy bases or colonies. Our objective is simple: conquer the main enemy base without losing ours.
As I mentioned, the principle is very simple, but putting it into practice is different. And one mistake that every beginner surely makes is to focus on dominating the enemy and conquering their bases, leaving your main base unguarded. When suddenly, without warning, a small enemy unit appears near your base, you cannot summon reinforcements, you do not go there. arrive on time, and A completely won game suddenly became an absolute and humiliating defeat.
But hey, let’s go in parts, normally at the start of the battles we will have 3 value points, these value points that we can find in the upper left part of our screens will be our currency both to deploy units and to use special abilities. Deploying a new unit costs 1 value point, and in order to obtain more value points and thus be able to continue deploying units and using skills, we must defeat enemy troops and take their command positions.
we must carefully study the enemy we face and deploy our first units accordingly. If we see that we are going to focus mainly on winged enemies, it makes no sense to deploy cavalry since they will be easily eliminated. However, if we eliminate a unit of archers, our winged enemies won’t be able to do much to escape. our arrows.
The combination of the different units deployed and how they interact with each other on the battlefield will be the key to success, since we can make them support each other and cover their weak points if we play smart.
The more different characters are part of the same unit, the more your bond of friendship will grow between them, which will result in different bonuses such as improving joint attacks and unlocking new narrative options by allowing us to enjoy exclusive conversations between characters.
Throughout our journey we will have to obtain gold to be able to buy items and equipment for our troops, but we will also have to obtain all kinds of materials to do so. be able to rebuild devastated cities after the control of the Empire. By improving these cities, new options will open up to us, such as new items available in the store and the armory, the possibility of posting a guard who will give us different items after each battle, and even in port cities opening the access to remote islands. with different hidden secrets. .
Duration
Unicorn Overlord is a long, very long game. To give you an idea, in the more than 30 hours I’ve played it, I’ve barely explored 50% of the new world that this title presents to us, so it’s not crazy to think that the game can easily surpass the 100 hours if we want to complete it 100%.
But a big positive thing about this title is that although everything can seem overwhelming, it really becomes bearable and becomes a very enjoyable experience.
conclusion
Although it has been in development for several years, the truth is that I had heard very little about Unicorn Overlord, and after having the opportunity to analyze its version for the best Xbox Series releases of this year and a game A must-play for anyone who loves tactical role-playing.
Honestly, I find it hard to find fault with this game and there is no reason not to recommend it to everyone, even those who are not versed in the genre, since thanks to the Story mode, even those who have less experience in this type of games will be able to enjoy the great experience that Unicorn Overlord offers us.

You can find the title available in the Microsoft Store at the price of $59.99.
