In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Lermy, a talented game designer who has contributed to the creation of several gods Hit, including Yu Huang, Ishtar and Martichoras. Today we’re going behind the scenes and take a look at the design process behind the highly anticipated addition of Charon the Ferryman. Lermy explores the inspiration, challenges, and unique traits that make Charon a standout character Hit.
Andy: Thanks for being with us today Lermy! Could you introduce yourself and tell us your role as a game designer? Hit?
Lerma: It’s a pleasure to be here! I’m Lermy, a game designer for Hit. In my role, I work with a team of talented individuals to bring new gods to life and deliver an immersive gaming experience for our players.
Andy: Let’s dive right into Charon, the latest addition to smiths god list. Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind this intriguing character?
Lerma: Charon is an intriguing character steeped in mythology. As the ferryman of the underworld, he is older than Hades and is in charge of the stewardship of souls in the afterlife. As the son of Nyx, or Nox as some may know her, Charon keeps things in order in the underworld realm – mostly on his boat. Using the five rivers of the underworld, he will lead souls to the afterlife as long as they pay the tribute; otherwise they remain in the Styx.
Andy: Fascinating! Which led the design team to choose Charon as the next character Hit?
Lerma: After the release of Maui, our previous Guardian character, we wanted to offer our players a different experience. Maui is pretty flashy – make sure to check out his movie if you haven’t had a chance yet – but with Charon, we aimed for a really neutral character. Charon embodies the concept of doing your daily tasks in a balanced way. He wants to get in his job, log his hours, and then get out. It was time to bring Charon, a highly requested character, into the game, especially as the community’s interest grew significantly over time.
Andy: The design process sounds fascinating. Could you walk us through the stages of bringing Charon to life? Hit?
Lerma: Surely! It all starts with exploring the character’s themes. We gather different departments, give them an overview of the character’s characteristics and discuss possible concerns. Then we move on to creating the character’s gear, which can be quite a challenge. We usually develop three different kits to explore different directions for the character. Finally, we narrow it down to the most promising kit. Once we have the final kit, we will submit it to the heads of all departments for approval. Once cleared, the team begins bringing Charon to life.
Andy: Charon’s design seems different from other gods Hit. How did you balance the spooky elements with the need for him to feel unique in the game?
Lerma: Balancing Charon’s design was indeed an exciting task. Charon is usually portrayed as frail and decrepit in other media, but we wanted to give him a special appearance in this film Hit. We decided to give him a skeleton, a trait we hadn’t explored before. We’ve also made him stocky to resemble a Lichlord while also making him feel like part of the Underworld family alongside Hades and Persephone. And of course we couldn’t overlook the boat. It’s an integral part of Charon’s identity
Andy: Do you have anything else you’d like to say to the community?
Lerma: Charon is a really unique tank and I think players will be really excited to see him zooming around the map and souls moving.
