No Rest for the wicked It is new game from Moon Studiosknown to be the developers of Ori and the Blind Forest Yes Ori and the Will of the Wisps, references in their genre. With this reputation behind it, expectations for this new game are not low. In this case It’s an action RPGwhich, in the words of the study itself, “aspires to revolutionize the genre”.
I had the opportunity to play its early access, because yes, Moon Studios decided to release the game that way. It means that the game is not over, it will therefore not be free of bugs, lack of content or features that do not exist directly but which will be implemented, all taking into account player feedback. This also follows Baldur’s Gate 3, which also started life this way, and then, over time, became the game of the year. By this I mean that it’s not bad that the game is released in early access, in fact, it’s quite the opposite, since the developers are in direct contact with the players and they can apply the feedback as soon as it arrives. That said, I’m going to speak directly about my gaming experience in Steam.
No Rest for the Wicked, its story and its world
For me, one of the main pillars of an RPG, and pretty much any game, is its world. Tuning goes a long wayputs us directly in the skin of the character, transports us to the time and context in question, makes us laugh, cry, feel what is happening.
The story of No rest for the wicked takes us to a fantastic world
Our character, which we create and name ourselves, is a cerim. They are a group of warriors with powers who have sworn to end the plague. However, our mission will become a little more complicated than expected since we are involved in the war within Sacra.
The audiovisual section
Sacra is a place punished by both war and plague, at least in part. It means that its landscape is full of contrasts. For example, we have the wetland, where we see the ravages of war in the scenario. Bodies and blood on the ground, makeshift barricades and destruction everywhere. On the other, we have the marshes or the forest, where we see lots of vegetation, flowers, animals and colors. In the town of Sacramenta, we see the trials of war, parts in ruins, worried people, religious people praying to their god and giving speeches, but also structures straight out of a medieval fantasy book, like the birdhouse or the crisis unit Another example, for contrast, is the sewers, completely infected with the plague. We see extremely dark environments, full of death and horrible creatures.
In No rest for the wicked all environments are loaded with details, we see many objects in every corner, we see how the wind moves the vegetation, we see the mist that accompanies the plague. The lighting is also very careful, the passage of time affects it and we can observe all the places at different times of the day. The graphics are very artistic, as if everything had been painted, I think, with wooden pencils. The characters are charismatic and varied, in addition to being extremely well animated, especially the facial expressions. Everyone’s voices accompany very well. By the way, the game is in English with Spanish subtitles.
The music didn’t seem too remarkable to me, I remember more an NPC who whistles the Ori soundtrack It’s really not the theme of the game. Even though it’s good, it sets the mood for each situation.
No Rest for the Wicked gameplay
No rest for the wicked are a somewhat different RPGbut we go there in parts. Combat is very similar to Souls, with stamina bar, strong and normal hits, dodges, parries and blocks, and even character stats. What’s new are enchantments and runes that we can apply not only to weapons, but also to armor. For example, we can apply a rune that reduces the weight of armor or a sword to inflict lightning damage. We can also give weapons some abilities or others, like a spinning attack or a fire-infused strike.
Speaking of weapons, there’s variety, we have everything from daggers and swords to magic staves and greatswords. There are also plenty of armors, each with their own stats. This, yes, everything is limited by the level of our character
Death is another subject to talk about, here we do not lose the “souls” where we die, but rather our equipment loses durability. Everything has a useful life, from weapons to tools, which in addition to use, also degrade with the death of our character. Of course, you can repair everything at the blacksmith or with an item for that. When we die, we will appear in the last whisper we interacted with. Out of curiosity, there is fast travel, but it only works from the city to the last whisper you touched and vice versa, so you have to take into account whether you touch one or not.
We move on to the lottery system. The map is loaded with items that we can collect, either directly from the ground or using a tool. For example, we can collect food from the ground, herbs or money, while we need an ax to cut down a tree. Saying that at first it’s a bit slow, but as we improve the tools we will collect much faster. We can also cook, which is important since food brings us different benefits, such as regaining health or resistance. We must learn the recipes before preparing certain dishes. Resources are renewed over time. Every day in the game the map changes, we literally have a fog of war, which tells us that the area we are exploring has changed. Objects will change place, others will appear, enemies will move or be different, everything is a surprise.
The loot It also helps us rebuild and improve the city, in addition to making objects and furniture, because yes we can have our own house to store things. In Sacramenta we can build an inn or improve the forge, build a road or an elevator to the nest box, to give some examples. Each build will require you to spend a certain amount of time in the game.
Available content and roadmap
The content it offers us No rest for the wicked it is considerable, approximately 40 hours between missions and crucible it’s not small for early access, yes, We only have a few story missions. The maximum character level is 30 and we have missions constantly, some are updated daily while others are updated weekly. In bounty hunting we eliminate certain enemies, while in challenges we perform certain actions, such as blocking 15 shots or cutting down x trees. Apart from that, we also have the classic missions of helping a certain character or creating something specific.
As for what’s coming, there’s a lot. Multiplayer will be added in the next update, where we can play with our friends and even cooperate in a community chest. Beyond that, different content and performance updates will come, as well as features and community feedback.
Issues to highlight
The game has some typical problems at the beginning. Performance sometimes leaves something to be desired, even if you have a powerful team. We don’t have any configuration options, we can just choose between different rendering modes, so we can’t know what we’re actually hitting.
In the gameplay there are also little things, for example, when you see equipment on the ground, you don’t know if it’s better or worse than what you’re wearing if you don’t take it first and since At the beginning there were problems with space in the inventory, it was very tedious. Also hay bugs, twice I fell off a cliff because the character was trying to cross a rock in a corner or a rescue bar was stuck in a certain place. The game is lacking, that’s undeniable, but that’s to be expected given, once again, that it’s early access.
Ultimately, No Rest for the Wicked is…
No rest for the wicked aims to be the best of its kind, as such. The feeling while playing, even with its drawbacks, is very positive. The combat is challenging, the progression is satisfying, and the world is rich in detail. The story also has a certain mystery that I really like, in addition to having charismatic and not at all flat characters.
The content is also quite comprehensive given the state of the title, we have hours and hours of fun. I can’t wait to see how development progresses and play the best game possible. No rest for the wicked continue, in my opinion, a very promising path.
