Reducing carbon pollution through energy upgrades
We recently announced that in just three years (FY20-FY23), Xbox has contributed to Microsoft's goal of becoming a zero-waste, carbon-negative and water-positive company by 2030, with measures to reduce energy consumption from console use , which prevented over 1.2 million tons of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) compared to use without intervention. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that this reduction will prevent more than 3 billion car miles of emissions (those driven by the average gasoline-powered passenger vehicle) from entering the atmosphere.
With recent system updates for Xbox consoles, we've also made significant progress in how Xbox Series S handles video content. To date, these improvements have resulted in an average reduction in power consumption of nearly 10% across all media apps on Xbox Series S, helping to reduce Microsoft's usage-based carbon footprint and potentially giving gamers the opportunity to save money on their monthly Save on electricity bills. Increasing the power efficiency of Xbox consoles through system updates and allowing players to introduce power saving features such as the power down (power save) option without impacting gameplay, media app or console performance have been Xbox's and our key contributions Community about these energy and emissions savings.
